William Avenall1

     William Avenall was born in 1887 in Shere, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Edward Avenall and Caroline Ann Durant.1 He was baptised on 5 June 1887 in St James, Abinger, Surrey, England, in the Mission Room. His parents were Edward and Caroline Avenall, living in Shere. Edward was a carter.3 He was the son of Edward Avenall and Caroline Ann Avenall in the 1901 census in Chinthurst Farm, Shalford, Surrey, England. William oils in the leather tannery.4 He married Alice Mayne, daughter of Ellen Mayne, on 28 September 1912 in St Mary, Bletchingley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Harry Waters and Nellie Alice Homewood. William was a police constable and his father Edward Avenall was a carter. Alice was a widow and no fathers details were recorded.5 William enlisted in the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment as Private L/8495 1st Battalion.6 He died on 3 January 1916 in France from wounds received in action.6 He was buried in Woburn Abbey Cemetery, Vuinchy, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, in plot I.E.14.6

     Edith Avenall was born in 1889 in Shalford, Surrey, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Edward Avenall and Caroline Ann Durant.1 She was the daughter of Edward Avenall and Caroline Ann Avenall in the 1901 census in Chinthurst Farm, Shalford, Surrey, England. Edward was a Carter on the Farm living with his wife who worked as a laundress and their children.3

     Ellen Trimmer was born circa 1855 in Rotherwick, Hampshire, England.1 She was the daughter of John Trimmer.2 She married Thomas Avenall, son of James Avenall, on 19 July 1890 in St Mary the Virgin, Shalford, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Trimmer and Mary Annie Browning. Thomas was a bricklayer and his father James a labourer. Ellen was a household servant and her father. John was deceased but had been a game keeper.1 She was the wife of Thomas Avenall in the 1891 census in Cornell Cottages, Pound Place, Shalford, Surrey, England. Thomas was a bricklayer living with his wife.3 She was the wife of Thomas Avenall in the 1901 census in Cornell Cottages, Pound Place, Shalford, Surrey, England. Thomas was a bricklayer living with his wife and children.4 She was the wife of Thomas Avenall in the 1911 census in Cornell Cottages, Pound Place, Shalford, Surrey, England. Thomas was a bricklayer living with his wife and five of their seven children.5
