His effects were valued at £5,838 16s 1d.8

William Avenell was born in 1887 in Shere, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Edward Avenell and Caroline Ann Durant.1 He was baptised on 5 June 1887 in St James, Abinger, Surrey, England, in the Mission Room. His parents were Edward and Caroline Avenall, living in Shere. Edward was a carter.3 He was the son of Edward Avenell and Caroline Ann Avenell in the 1901 census in Chinthurst Farm, Shalford, Surrey, England. William worked in the leather tannery.4 He married Alice Mayne, daughter of Ellen Mayne, on 28 September 1912 in St Mary, Bletchingley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Harry Waters and Nellie Alice Homewood. William was a police constable and his father Edward Avenall was a carter. Alice was a widow and no fathers details were recorded.5 William enlisted in the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment as Private L/8495 1st Battalion.6 He died on 3 January 1916 in France from wounds received in action.6 He was buried in Woburn Abbey Cemetery, Vuinchy, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, in plot I.E.14.6
