John was a hay and corn factor.2 He married Emma Hodges, daughter of ... Hodges and Hannah ..., in 1861 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England.3 Thomas and his son John were partners from 1864 in the company Thomas Cook and Son.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in 3 Percy Villas, Peckham Road, Camberwell, London, England.      Thomas Cook was born on 22 November 1808 in Melbourne, Derbyshire, England. He was the son of John Cook and ... ... He was baptised circa 1825 in Melbourne Baptist Church, Melbourne, Derbyshire, England.1 Thomas left school around the age of ten, when his mother died. He was apprenticed to a wood turner. He became a Baptist missionary in 1828. A strict teetotaller he became a cabinet maker. He walked from his home in Market Harborough to the nearby town of Leicester to attend a temperence meeting. At the meeting he suggested that a special train be engaged to carry the Leicester temperence campaigners to Loughborogh a month later. The first package tour in history was organised for 5 July 1841, when a train was chartered from Midland Railway Company to take the group of about 500 on the 12 mile journey. He charged the passengers a shilling for the return journey.2 He married Marianne Mary Ann Mason on 2 March 1833 in Barrowden, Rutland, England, After a licence had been taken out. The ceremony was witnessed by Henry Mason and H Boyce.2,3 He was listed as head of household in the 1841 census in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England. Thomas was listed as a turner living with his wife and son.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Granby Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. Thomas as a boarding house keeper and printer living with his wife, daughter, two servants and seven lodgers.5 Thomas founded the company Thomas Cook and Son in 1860s.2 Thomas and his son John were partners from 1864 in the company Thomas Cook and Son.2 His wife Marianne died on 8 March 1884 in Blaby, Leicestershire, England.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Thornways. London Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. Thomas was strangely described as a retired florist? living with his 55 year old niece Emma Mason, three servants and a nurse.7 He died on 18 July 1892 in Bergen, Norway, at age 83.2 His estate was probated on 8 October 1892 in Leicester to Samuel Sharman Wheeler a wholesale grocer and George Glasgow a retired grocer.
