     John Mason Cook was born on 13 January 1834 in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England. He was the son of Thomas Cook and Marianne Mary Ann Mason. He was the son of Thomas Cook and Marianne Mary Ann Cook in the 1841 census in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England.1 He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in 29 Granby Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. John was a hay and corn factor.2 He married Emma Hodges, daughter of ... Hodges and Hannah ..., in 1861 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England.3 Thomas and his son John were partners from 1864 in the company Thomas Cook and Son.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in 3 Percy Villas, Peckham Road, Camberwell, London, England. John was listed as an Excursion agent travelling in Italy living with his wife, children, mother in law (Hannah Hodges), a visitor, Governess and two servants.5 John was living at 9 and 10 Ludgate Circus and employed as a tourist contractor when on 6 February 1895 he was admitted into the Freedom of the City of London, by redemption, in the Company of Frame work Knitters.6 He died on 4 March 1899 in Mount Felix, Walton on Thames, Surrey, England, at age 65 he sometimes lived at Ludgate Circus in Fleet Street, London.7,8 His estate was probated on 29 March 1899 in London to Frank Henry Cook, Ernest Edward Cook and Thomas Albert Cook bankers and tourist's agents and William Purdie Treoar an alderman. His effects were valued at £390,030 10s 9d and resworn in February 1900 as £622,534 3s 4d.8 He was buried in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester, Leicestershire, England, John and Emma were buried under the same gravestone.9

     Emma Hodges was born on 17 July 1834 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England.1 She was the daughter of ... Hodges and Hannah ... She married John Mason Cook, son of Thomas Cook and Marianne Mary Ann Mason, in 1861 in Leicester, Leicestershire, England.2 She was the wife of John Mason Cook in the 1871 census in 3 Percy Villas, Peckham Road, Camberwell, London, England. John was listed as an Excursion agent travelling in Italy living with his wife, children, mother in law (Hannah Hodges), a visitor, Governess and two servants.3 She was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Francisco, Croydon, Surrey, England. Emma was an Excursion agent living with her daughters, three visitors and servants. I suspect her husband was on one of his travels.4 She died on 10 February 1902 at age 67.1 She was buried in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester, Leicestershire, England, John and Emma were buried under the same gravestone.1

     Thomas Cook was born on 22 November 1808 in Melbourne, Derbyshire, England. He was the son of John Cook and ... ... He was baptised circa 1825 in Melbourne Baptist Church, Melbourne, Derbyshire, England.1 Thomas left school around the age of ten, when his mother died. He was apprenticed to a wood turner. He became a Baptist missinary in 1828. A strict teetotaller he became a cabinet maker. He walked from his home in Market Harborough to the nearby town of Leicester to attend a temperence meeting. At the meeting he suggested that a special train be engaged to carry the Leicester temperence campaigners to Loughborogh a month later. The first package tour in history was organised for 5 July 1841, when a train was chartered from Midland Railway Company to take the group of about 500 on the 12 mile journey. He charged the passengers a shilling for the return journey.2 He married Marianne Mary Ann Mason on 2 March 1833 in Barrowden, Rutland, England, After a licence had been taken out. The ceremony was witnessed by Henry Mason and H Boyce.2,3 He was listed as head of household in the 1841 census in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England. Thomas was listed as a turner living with his wife and son.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Granby Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. Thomas as a boarding house keeper and printer living with his wife, daughter, two servants and seven lodgers.5 Thomas founded the company Thomas Cook and Son in 1860s.2 Thomas and his son John were partners from 1864 in the company Thomas Cook and Son.2 His wife Marianne died on 8 March 1884 in Blaby, Leicestershire, England.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Thornways. London Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. Thomas was strangely described as a retired florist? living with his 55 year old niece Emma Mason, three servants and a nurse.7 He died on 18 July 1892 in Bergen, Norway, at age 83.2 His estate was probated on 8 October 1892 in Leicester to Samuel Sharman Wheeler a wholesale grocer and George Glasgow a retired grocer. His effects were valued at 32,731 7s 2d.8 Thomas, Marianne and their daughter Annie lie under the same gravestone in Welford Road Cemetery. Leicestershire.9

Thomas was listed as a turner living with his wife and son.4 She was the wife of Thomas Cook in the 1851 census in Granby Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. Thomas as a boarding house keeper and printer living with his wife, daughter, two servants and seven lodgers.5 She was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in The Temperence Hotel, 63 Granby Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. Marianne was the Hotel keeper running it with her daughter Annie while her husband Thomas was off travelling. There were five servants and six boarders in residence.6 She was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Temperence Hall Hotel, 63 Granby Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. Marianne was he wife of the hotel keeper although he was not at home on census night. She had her grandson Frank staying with her with five servants and 4 boarders.7 She died on 8 March 1884 in Blaby, Leicestershire, England, at age 77.8 Thomas, Marianne and their daughter Annie lie under the same gravestone in Welford Road Cemetery. Leicestershire.2

     Ivy Isobel Trice was born on 27 November 1898. She married Edward Mercer, son of William Edward Mercer and Annie Coombes, on 7 April 1928 in St Mary the Virgin, Shalford, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Ralph Trier Frances Annie Lawrence and Sydney Mercer. Edward was a bricklayer from Shamley Green. His father William Edward Mercer was a groundsman. Ivy was from Shalford and her father Ralph Trice was a licenced Victualler.1,2 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ivy was listed as living at Gleness, Littleford Lane, Shamley Green, Surrey, England with her husband Edward. Edward was a bricklayer.3
