     Charles Durrant Hodgson was born in 1850 in Clapham, London, England.1 He married Emily Godwin Austen on 29 April 1880 in St Mary the Virgin, Shalford, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert A S Godwin Austin, Jane Durrant Hodgson, James Graham, William E Godwin Austin and H H Godwin Austin. Charles was a Captain in R S Militia and living in Norbiton, his father William Frederic Hodgson was a brewer. Emily's father Robert Alfred Cloyne Godwin-Austin as described as an Esquire.2 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Cottingley House, Kingston Vale, Surrey, England. Charles was living on his own means with his wife and four children. The family had seven servants including two nurses, two house maids, a kitchen maid, a butler and a cook.3 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in The Hallams, Blackheath, Surrey, England. Charles was a retired Brewer, The family had owned Hodgsons’ Kingston Brewery. Charles was living with his wife, three children. The household also consisted of his cousins Annie Clara Hodgson and Clarence Mortimer Hodgson, his nieces and Elizabeth Augusta May, Godwin Austen and Mary Hannah Hamilton. There was also a butler, cook, nurse, housemaid, under housemaid and footman.4 In 1903 the family moved to Blackheath on the boarders of Shamley Green.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in The Hallams, Blackheath, Surrey, England. Charles was listed as a gentleman farmer living with his wife and two children. There were six servants in the household, a butler, housemaid, kitchenmaid, cook, nurse and footman.6 It must have been devastating for Charles and Emily when they received news that two of their sons, Charles and Cyril had died within days of each other fighting for their Country. They are both commemorated in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.7 He died in 1920 in The Hallams, Blackheath, Surrey, England.8 He was buried on 30 April 1920 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, in plot X8.9 Sir Charles and Lady Hodgson gave a stained glass windows in Christ Church in memory of their two sons who died in hospital in Egypt within ten days of each other. The windows depict the Arthurian Knights theme reminding one of the sacrifice made in the search for the Holy Grail and the figure on the left represents Jesus offering the cup our of doors as priests offered battlefield sacraments.10

     Harold Edward Austen Hodgson was born on 4 March 1884 in Kingston Hill, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Charles Durrant Hodgson and Emily Godwin Austen. He was the son of Charles Durrant Hodgson and Emily Godwin Hodgson in the 1891 census in Cottingley House, Kingston Vale, Surrey, England.3 He was educated at Eton 1897 - 1899 and the Trinity College in Cambridge.4,5 All three siblings Charles, Cyril and Harold were in the same house at Eton and the same housemaster, Philip Williams. Their tutor was Ernest Lee Churchill. Charles and Cyril were also taught by Robert Penrice Lee Booker.5 He was the son of Charles Durrant Hodgson and Emily Godwin Hodgson in the 1901 census in The Hallams, Blackheath, Surrey, England.6 In 1903 the family moved to Blackheath on the boarders of Shamley Green Harold enjoyed playing both cricket and footbal for the Blackheath teams when home from Cambridge.4 In August 1908 Harold joined 3rd Battalion of the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. This was a volunteer reserve battalion based at Stoughton Barracks.4 He appeared in the household as a boarder in the 1911 census in Gleadthorpe Grange, Worsop, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. He was staying with Robert and Jane Blades and is described as a pupil on the farm.7 Wanting to serve like his brothers he transferred to Norfolk Regiment, serving in many theatres of war including the Western Front, the Mesopotamian Campaign, Gallipoli and Gaza.4 He married Catherine Phyllis Champneys in 1923 in Kensington, London, England.8 His wife Catherine died in 1942 in Surrey, England.9 He married Eileen Mary Drew in 1947 in Lewes, Sussex, England.10 Harold and Eillen sailed into Southampton on 3 November 1950 on board SS Oranjefontein travelling 1st class from Capetown. Harold was described as a retired from the Army. Their address in the UK was in Little Swanborough, Lewes, Sussex, England.2 Harold and Eileen arrived in Plymouth on 21 February 1956 on board SS Venus from Madeira. Their address in the UK was in The White Cottage, Ilford, Essex, England.2 He died on 27 September 1965 in Claremont Grove Hospital, Exmouth, Devon, England, at age 81.11,12 His estate was probated on 9 November 1965 in Lewes to Eileen Hodgson his widow and Peter John Bunker solicitor.      John Charteris was born on 8 January 1877 in Lanarkshire, Scotland, He was the son of a Senior Professor of Materia Medica at Glasgow University.1 John was fluent in French and German. He did not go to Sandhurst, but was the outstanding graduate of the young soldiers of teh British Army serving in North East India in Quetta in 1909. When General Haig was appointed to Corps Command at Aldershot in 1912, the then Captain Charteris was one of his trusted officers whom he brought from India with him.1 He married Noel Emily Beatrice Hodgson, daughter of Charles Durrant Hodgson and Emily Godwin Austen, on 20 October 1913 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read, The ceremony was witnessed by E Charteris, A H Charteris, G Hodgson and A H Bingley, John was a Captain in the Royal Engineers living in Government House in Aldershot. His father Matthew Charteris was deceased. Noel's father was Charles Durant Hodgson was a Gentleman.2 He was Sir Douglas Haig's Chief Intelligence Officer at the British Expeditionary Force's (BEF) headquarters from 1915-1918. By he end of the war he was a Brigadier-General. The last few years of his military career was spent in Simla in India. He retired in 1922.1 After the war John and Noel lived in The Hallams in Blackheath moving later to India for John to complete his military career.3 John, Noel and Nigel were living in 1945.4 He died on 4 February 1946 in Bourne House, Thorpe, Surrey, England, at age 69.5,6 His estate was probated on 27 May 1946 in London to his widow Noel Emily Beatrice Charteris and John Douglas Archibald Charteris a Major in HM Army. His effects were valued at £6,895 4s 11d in England.6

     Charles Henry Phelp was born on 8 April 1890 in Brighton, Sussex, England.1,2 He married Eileen Mary Robina in 1912 in Brighton, Sussex, England.3 Charles enlisted into the Royal Air Force on 16 April 1918 with a service number of 162436. He gave his next of kin as his mother Letitia Phelp.2 He married Marie Elizabeth Churcher in 1920 in Brighton, Sussex, England, It seemed they divorced before 1939 as Marie married Edward J Newington later that year.4 He died on 13 January 1939 in 53 Brunswick Road, Hove, Sussex, England, at age 48 his other address was 193 Upper Shoreham Road, Shoreham by Sea.5,6 His estate was probated on 18 September 1939 in Lewes.      Frederick Mant was born in 1861 in Worplesdon, Surrey, England.1,2 He was baptised on 29 December 1861 in St Luke, Burpham, Surrey, England, his parents were John and Elizabeth Mant. John was a labourer and the family lived on Widemoor Common.3 He appeared in the household as a lodger in the 1881 census in Stone Cottage, Worplesdon, Surrey, England. He was an agricultural labourer lodging with Thomas and Eliza Peters, his future parents in law.4 He married Charlotte Peters on 24 December 1881 in St Mary, Worplesdon, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read, The ceremony was witnessed by Thomas Peters and Thirza Crawton, Frederick was a labourer like his father John Mant. Charlotte 's father Thomas Peters was also a labourer.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England. Frederick was a powder worker living with his wife and family with 2 lodgers.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in White Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England. Frederick was a labourer in the powder mill and lived with his wife and family. They had two boarders.7 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England. Frederick was a coal porter at the gunpowder factory with his wife and children. His father in law was with them.8 When Frederick and Charlotte heard of the death of their son James they were living in White Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England.9 He witnessed the marriage of Selina Amy Edwards and Benjamin Mant on 25 September 1920 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.10,11 He died on 20 January 1931 in White Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England, the cottage next to the Volunteer Public House.12,13 His estate was probated on 21 January 1931 in London. Administration papers were issued to his widow Charlotte Mant. His effects were valued at £67 9s 1d.13 He was buried on 24 January 1931 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot 3 after a service in St John the Baptist, Wonersh.14

     Benjamin Mant was born in 1896 in Blackheath, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Peters. He was baptised on 5 January 1896 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Mant in the 1901 census in White Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England.3 Benjamin enlisted and served in the Gloucester Regiment possibly as a despatch rider initially as a private, then as a Corporal. he served in the Balkans.4 Lance Corporal B Mant spent time in Edward Ward of the County Hospital in Guildford suffering from frost bitten feet and was sent on 28 April to Newlands Corner Convalescence Home and then when recovered he rejoined his regiment and was promoted to a full Corporal.5 He married Selina Amy Edwards, daughter of James Edwards and Elizabeth Tuckwell, on 25 September 1920 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Frederick G Mant and William James Edwards. Benjamin was a chauffeur, his father Frederick Mant was a labourer. Selina's father James Edwards was also a labourer.6,7 In 1922 Benjamin was living in 4 Pine Cottages, Blackheath, Surrey, England.8 Benjamin lived in 1924 in Chilworth Road, Salford, Surrey, England.8 In 1927 Benjamin is listed as living in Fairways Garage, Epsom, Surrey, England.8 Benjamin and Selina lived from 1928-1933 at least in Hatchford Garage, Epsom, Surrey, England.9 Benjamin and Selina lived from 1936-1938 at least in Kenwolde Garage, Chertsey, Surrey, England.9 He died in 1961 in St Peters Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey, England.      Levi Mant was born in October 1898 in Blackheath, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Peters. He was baptised on 13 November 1898 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Mant in the 1901 census in White Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Frederick Mant and Charlotte Mant in the 1911 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England.4 Levi enlisted on 31 August 1916 into the Queens East Surrey Regiment No 193421 and trained as a machine gunner with the Machine Gun and Tank Corp. Private Mant was described as being 5 foot 3 inches with a chest measurement of 34 inches. He had brown hair and gave his occupation as a gunpowder packer. He was demobbed on October 1919. He received his war medals on 16 June 1922.5,6 He married Catherine Annie Grace Edwards on 14 July 1934 in St Martins, Blackheath, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Thomas Edwards and William Hiscock. Levi was an engineer and his father Frederick Mant was deceased but had worked as a labourer. Catherine's father Frank Edwards was also a labourer. The couple both gave their address as White Cottage in Blackheath.7,8 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Levi was listed as living at White House, Blackheath, Surrey, England, with his wife Catherine. Levi was a cutter grinder of machine tools.9
