Edgar Walter Jelley was born on 30 April 1898 in Bramley, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of William Benjamin Jelley and Eliza Jane Ellis. He was baptised on 3 July 1898 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, his father was a plumber.3 He was the son of William Benjamin Jelley and Eliza Jane Jelley in the 1901 census in Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England.4 He was the son of William Benjamin Jelley and Eliza Jane Ellis in the 1911 census in Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England.5 There is a note on Edgar's papers to say he had been attended by Dr Graham from Wonersh when he was suffering from typhoid in April 1916.6 Edgar signed up at Stoughton Barracks and was assigned to Bromeswell Camp in Suffolk on 28 September 1916 into 2/1 Surrey Yeomanry No 46008 giving his occupation as a footman for Captain LCW Phillips of Unsted Park in Godalming, being 18 years and 5 months old and his address as Birtley Road in Bramley where his father also lived. Edgar was five foot twn inches tall with a chest measurement of 36 inches. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and fair hair.6 Edgar was hospitalised for infuenza on 19 March 1917 for 5 days in Foxhall Heath Military Hospital.6 Edgar was dispatched to Dublin on 19 June 1918.6 On 16 August 1918 Edgar went absent without leave for 12 hours while in Galway for which he had to forfeit one days pay.6 He received his discharge papers on 7 March 1919.6 He married Winifred Alice Coleman, daughter of Albert George Coleman and Lucy Marian Pearce, on 18 May 1929 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by the fathers Albert George Coleman and William Benjamin Jelley. Edgar was a carpenter and his father a plumber while Winifred's father was a compositor.7,8 Edgar and Winifred were in 1930 living in Runnymede, Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England.9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Edgar was listed as living at Runnymede, Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England, with his wife Winifred. Edgar was a carpenter.10 He died in June 1980 in Surrey, England, at age 82 The death is registered on the GRO records as Edgar William I believe this is a mistake.11

Harold Percy Balchin was born on 21 August 1901 in Cranleigh, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the grandson of William Balchin and Clara Chewter in the 1911 census in Eastwood Road, Bramley, Surrey, England.3 Harold signed on 21 August 1919 for 12 years he was 5 foot 6 inches tall, had a chest measurement of 34 inches, brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion. He first served on the ship Fisgard.2 He married Bertha Emily Fitzgerald on 27 June 1931 in Bishop Ryder, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Mervin Scrimshaw RN and Eileen Fitzgerald. Harold was a ship engineer on HMS London. His father was listed as William Balchin a farmer. Bertha was a tailoress living at 54 Ryder Street. Her father James Fitzgerald was deceased and had been a policeman.4,5 He died on 24 November 1941 at age 40 presumed dead due to enemy action on HMS Dunedin while in the Royal Navy and is remembered on Panel 53 Column 1.4,2

Phillip Aine James was born in 1862 in Tarrant Hinton, Dorset, England.1 He was the son of George James and Ellen Hiscock. He was baptised on 24 August 1862 in St Mary, Tarrant Hinton, Dorset, England, his parents were George and Ellen James. His father was a labourer and the family lived in Tarrant Hinton.2 He was a son of Ellen James in the 1871 census in Tarrant Hinton, Dorset, England.3 He was the step son of John Hunt and Ellen Hiscock in the 1881 census in Turnworth, Dorset, England. Philip was enumerated as Aine and was a farm carter.4 He married Fanny Sarah Williams in 1883 in Blandford, Dorset, England.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Typings, Pickhurst, West Wickham, Kent, England. Phillip was a general labourer living with his wife, son Edwin, mother in law Martha Hayles, two visitors George and Jane Williams and a domestic servant Agnes Hurt. George Williams was a Game keeper.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in The Lodge, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Phillip was a farm bailiff for the Sudburys living with his wife and son Edwin and Philip's mother in law Martha Hayes. Phillip and Fanny had two children both living in 1911.7 The shock of hearing his son Edwin had died caused Philip's hair to fall out over night. He suffered from alopecia for the rest of his life.8 He died on 11 April 1947 in Pickhurst, Wonersh Road, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.9,10 His estate was probated on 9 August 1947 in London to George Charles James an engine driver and George Wickham Noaks solictor managing clerk. His effects were valued at £2840 16s 6d.10

Fanny Sarah Williams was born circa 1863 in Blandford, Dorset, England.1 She married Phillip Aine James, son of George James and Ellen Hiscock, in 1883 in Blandford, Dorset, England.2 She was the wife of Phillip Aine James in the 1901 census in Typings, Pickhurst, West Wickham, Kent, England. Phillip was a general labourer living with his wife, son Edwin, mother in law Martha Hayles, two visitors George and Jane Williams and a domestic servant Agnes Hurt. George Williams was a Game keeper.3 She was the wife of Phillip Aine James in the 1911 census in The Lodge, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Phillip was a farm bailiff for the Sudburys living with his wife and son Edwin and Philip's mother in law Martha Hayes. Phillip and Fanny had two children both living in 1911.4 Fanny worked as a VAD Needleworker at Thorncombe Street Military Hospital, Bramley, Surrey between January 1916 and 31 January 1919, she gave her address as The Lodge in Wonersh.5 Mrs. James wrote a notice in the Surrey Advertiser of Monday 9 December 1918 that read: "The Lodge, Wonersh, would be glad to receive news of Pte. E.A.James. 7th Buffs C Company, who was reported wounded on 23 October, and of whom no further news has since been heard."6 Her husband Phillip died on 11 April 1947 in Pickhurst, Wonersh Road, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.7,8 She died on 4 June 1947 in Pickhurst, Wonersh Road, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.9,8 Her estate was probated on 31 July 1947 in London to George Charles James an engine driver and George Wickham Noaks solictor managing clerk. His effects were valued at £2,819 18s 4d.8

John Hunt was born circa 1827 in Tarrant Rushton, Dorset, England. He married Ellen James in 1876 in Blandford, Dorset, England.1 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Turnworth, Dorset, England. John was a shepherd living with his new wife and her two sons, together with his three children from a previous marriage, John Hunt aged 22, George Hunt aged 19 and Edward Hunt aged 13 all shepherds like their father.2
