     Jean Frances Birks was born on 8 April 1910 in Romford, Essex, England.2,3 She was the daughter of Arthur Horace Birks and Beatrice Harriet Simpson. In the census of 2 April 1911 in 29 Salisbury Avenue, Goole, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Arthur Horace Birks Arthur was an Examining Officer for Customs and Excise living with his wife and daughter in their seven roomed home.4 She died in June 1988 in Devon, England, aged 78.5

He was baptised on 13 January 1793 in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England.3 He married Mary Bowes on 13 July 1820 in Penistone, Yorkshire, England.2,4 Richard was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 6 June 1841 in Upper bridge, Cartworth, Kirk Burton, Yorkshire, England, Richard was a butcher living with his wife and family and Martha Roberts who is described as a nurse aged 60. I notice the Woodhead family live next door. Was this the family into which young Mary married?5 Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Newtown, Upperthong, Yorkshire, England, Richard was a butcher, living in the household was Martha Roberts an unmarried pauper aged 74 who was born in Holmfirth.6 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Fartown, Pudsey, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the father in law of Joseph Woodhead Richard was an agricultural labourer.7 He died in 1867 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.8
