     Richard Birks was born on 11 January 1793 in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England.1,2 He was the son of Richard Birks and Mary Bowes. He married Mary Roberts, daughter of Jonathon Roberts.2 Richard was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 June 1841 in Upper bridge, Cartworth, Kirk Burton, Yorkshire, England, Richard was a butcher living with his wife and family and Martha Roberts who is described as a nurse aged 60. I notice the Woodhead family live next door. Was this the family into which young Mary married.3 Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Newtown, Upperthong, Yorkshire, England, Richard was a butcher, living in the household was Martha Roberts an unmarried pauper aged 74 who was born in Holmfirth.4
