Mary Langford Brett was born on 30 December 1915 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 She was the daughter of George William Brett and Amy Sherman.1 She was baptised on 25 March 1916 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, her father was the Parish Clerk and bootmaker.2 She was the daughter of George William Brett and Amy Brett in the 1921 census in Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 Mary went to Bramley school and then to Technical College in Guildford. She later trained as a children’s nurse and had various jobs working mainly for the Church of England’s Society in children’s homes looking after motherless children and children from broken homes. She came home to look after her parents who became very old and needed help.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Mary Langford Brett was listed as living at Grasmere, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with her parents Mary was a book keeper and a member of the Red Cross.5 In 1970 Margaret was living with her niece Mary in Grasmere, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England.6 In 1981 Mary moved to Alderbrook 9 New Road in Wonersh, a lovely bungalow bequeathed to her by Harry Wise, a gentleman who worked for her father George.7 Mary moved in June 2015 in Brownscombe House, Hindhead Road, Haslemere, Surrey, England.8 Mary celebrated on 30 December 2015 her 100th birthday with her family. Apparently she was in fine fettle sipping Prosecco!8 She died on 23 January 2017 in Brownscombe House, Hindhead Road, Haslemere, Surrey, England, at age 101.7 Her body was cremated on 14 February 2017 in Guildford Crematorium, Godalming, Surrey, England, followed by a service of Thanksgiving in St John the Baptist in Wonersh.8

He was baptised on 7 December 1890 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, the vicar made a mistake spelling the family surname as Stevens.2 He was the son of Harry Stephens and Laura Jane Stephens in the 1891 census in Smithwood, Albury, Surrey, England. George was only 5 months old.3 He was the grandson of Elizabeth Stemp in the 1901 census in Stroud Lane, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.4 George went for a medical in Guildford on 7 October 1907. He was 5 foot 7½ inches tall, weighing 127lbs, had a chest measuring 37 inches. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He had some tattoos on his arms. His employment sheet written on 10 November 1913 described him as a bricklayers labourer. His character was very good, an intelligent, industrial man who can always be relied upon to do his work thoroughly. Had no particular civilian qualifications. Is clean, honest, strictly sober and trustworthy. He had waited in the officers mess 1908 - 1912 and been a telephone operator 1910-11.5 George was accepted and first posted as a private on 10 October 1907, he had a second posting on 10 January 1908.5 George whilst at Colchester received two antityphoid injection initially on 15 November 1909 and the secondly on 25 November 1909.5 Heappeared in the 1911 census. George was in the 2nd Battalion "The Queens" Regiment of Infantry (E 7 F Company) stationed in Gibraltar. His commanding Officer was Lt Colonel J G King-King DSO.6 George spent a couple of short spells in hospital having been admitted suffering from soft chancre.5 George was listed as absent from Tattoo until 9:35am on 3 August 1913 while in Bermuda. This was the 4th instant that this had happened. He was punished with 8 days confined to barracks. He had previously been admonished and received 5 days confined to barracks.5 Whilst in Bermuda George had two antityphoid injections the first on 21 November and second on 1 December 1913.5 George went absent without leave from 25 - 29 September 1914.5 He died on 7 November 1914 in France at age 24 after serving 7 years 32 days in Gibraltar, Burma, South Africa and the British Expeditionary Force. He was declared killed in action.7,5 George's name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Ypres Panel 11, 13 and 14.7
Laura signed for George's British War medal on 25 February 1921. She signed for George's clasp to 1914 star on 21 May 1921. It was issued to him under the surname of Stevens. Laura changed the spelling to Stephens.5

Ellen Mary Stephens was born on 3 May 1893 in Albury, Surrey, England.1 She was the daughter of Harry Stephens and Laura Jane Stemp.2 She was the grand daughter of Elizabeth Stemp in the 1901 census in Stroud Lane, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.3 She married William Thomas Sandercock on 29 March 1916 in St Nicolas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, after a licence was issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Laura Jane Spooner and John Spooner. William was a soldier from Cornwall, his father William John Sandercock was a grocer Ellen's father Harry Stephens was deceased.4,5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Ellen was listed as living at Meadowside, Cracklington Haven, St Gennys, Bude, Cornwall, England, with her husband William. William was a general labourer. They lived alonside many of his Sandercock relatives and a lady called Florence Sandercock born 19 March 1898 maybe his sister in law.6 Her husband William died on 19 February 1960 in Meadowside, Cracklington Haven, St Gennys, Bude, Cornwall, England.7,8 She died in September 1978 in Surrey, England, at age 85.9

Mary Spooner was born circa 1835. She married John Botting, son of William Botting, on 23 October 1857 in St Peter and St Paul, Albury, Surrey, England, after the banns were read.
