Susan Marshall was born circa 1847.2 She married Benjamin Brett, son of George Brett and Fanny Hardy, on 18 September 1881 in St Andrew, Holborn, London, England, after a licence had been taken out. Benjamin was a widower from St Andrews Holborn, Susan was a spinster from Romford. The wedding ceremony was witnessed by George John Sneath and Thomas Challenger. Benjamin was described as a school board visitor living in 105 High Holborn and his father a cordwainer was dead. Susan was from Colyer Row in Romford and her father Robert William Marshall a soldier was also deceased.

Benjamin was a technical clerk for a scientific instrument maker and a volunteer ARP warden.5 He died in 1989 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.6

John Hurren

John Hurren was born on 8 July 1879 in Bethnal Green, London, England, maybe born 8 July 1880.1,2 He was the son of John Hurren and Margaret ...3 He was the son of John Hurren and Margaret Hurren in the 1891 census in 43 Camberwell Green, Camberwell, London, England.4 He married Alice Sarah Howes in 1903 in Lambeth, London, England.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in 130 Upland Road, Camberwell, London, England. John was an architectural sculptor living with his wife Alice a school teacher and their two sons Bernard and 11 month old George with one servant.6 It is believed John and his family were bombed out of their home in Chelsea and came to Wonersh to live.7 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register John was listed as living at Elmcot, Wonersh, Surrey, England, John was a sculptor in wood and stone living with his sisters Kathleen, Margaret, Caroline, Ellen and brother in law.1 John made the ten foot stone carvings in the gatehouse into Wonersh Church Green. They were put in place on 18 May 1953 by John Hurren being carved in his studio at the back of the Grantley Arms.
The inscription is “The inspiration and design for this freize originated with Beatrice E Cook and was developed and carved by John Hurren both being residents of this village Finis 1953 EIIR”
The second panel is a memorial to “unpraised civilians” who served and endured the second world war, and is intended to depict figures which typify every aspect of village life.These include the Women’s Institute, the Land Girls, the Boy Scouts, the farmer and fishmonger. There are 22 figures in all.
An article appeared in the Portsmouth Evening News of 21 May 1953 about the friezes.8,9

His wife Alice died on 26 November 1953 in Birtley House, Bramley, Surrey, England.10,11 John moved to Worthing in 1966.12 He died in 1968 in Swandean Hospital, Worthing, Sussex, England.13,14 He was buried on 11 January 1968 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot 509 with his wife Alice who died in 1953 after a service in St John the Baptist in Wonersh.14

Margaret Hurren was born on 5 December 1880 in Newington, London, England.1,2 She was the daughter of John Hurren and Margaret ...1 She was the daughter of John Hurren and Margaret Hurren in the 1891 census 43 Camberwell Green, Camberwell, London, England.3 She was the daughter of John Hurren and Margaret Hurren in the 1911 census in 4 Crofton Road, Camberwell, London, England. Margaret was a LCC Tramways clerk.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register she was listed as living at Elmcot, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with her brother John and sisters.2 She received the probate of the estate of Kathleen Hurren on 30 April 1940.5 She died in 1967 in Hambledon House, Surrey, England, she had previously lived in Elscott on Wonersh Common.6 She was buried on 12 May 1967 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot 907 after a service in St John the Baptist in Wonersh.7
