Frederick Oliver was born on 30 August 1908 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of William Oliver and Lily Burningham. He was the son of William Oliver and Lily Oliver in the 1911 census in Mitchells Row, Shalford, Surrey, England.2,3 He married Florence Emily Simpson, daughter of Robert John Simpson and Alice Carrington, on 8 April 1933 in Lexden, Essex, England.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Frederick was listed as living at Chesterford, Barnett Lane, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with his wife Florence. Frederick was a flour mill packer for Bottings flour mill in Albury, working twelve hour shifts of 6-6 day or night.5,6 Frederick when he bought the plot of land in 1936 in Barnett Lane, it stretched all the way through to New Road. The family were growing up and in 1952 Fred obtained permission from Hambledon Council to have a house built at the end of the garden alongside other houses in New Road. The family moved to the new house in 1953 and called it Midway, as it was midway down New Road, and midway between Barnett and Chilworth Hill. He fenced off half the garden and sold Chesterford for £2,500.7,6 Fred had worked for many years as a miller at Bottings. When mill conditions began to affect his health he developed pneumonia from all the dust. Once when he was really bad Dr Launder stayed up all night with him to make sure he survived the night. He moved to the GPO Telephones from which, having reached the age limit he retired in 1968. He decided he felt the need for some part-time work. The post of Verger at the Church had vacant for 2 years and he wondered whether he had the right qualities for the work involved. He need not have worried; for the next 8 years he performed these duties, which then included care of the Churchyard, with great devotion and meticulous attention to detail. He retired in 1976 as Verger and the Vicar, Rev Hugh Anthony took on the duties himself. When in 1980 the Vicar retired and the Church faced an uncertain length without a Verger. Fred took back the Vergers role and in fact continued for the first few years with the new Vicar Rev Tom Farrell.8,6 Fred and Florence moved in Selhurst, 7 New Road in 1972 staying until Fred's death in 1993. Florence stayed on until her death in1996.9 Fred retired from the role of verger in 1985.10 He died on 8 October 1993 in 7 New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 85.11,12,13 He was buried on 14 October 1993 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot B38.14,15 His estate was probated on 26 October 1993 in Winchester.
