Albert James Latham

Albert James Latham was born on 22 February 1889 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, his father worked in Portsmouth dockyard, an established Industrial Civil Servant.1,2 He was the son of James John Latham and Ellen Louisa Butler. He was the son of James John Latham and Ellen Louisa Butler in the 1891 census in 73 Winchester Road, Portsea, Hampshire, England.3 He was the son of James John Latham and Ellen Louisa Latham in the 1901 census in 68 Toronto Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.4 Albert served an apprenticeship in Pharmacy but did not like working in the shop too much. He sung in the church choir. When the Vicar of St Marks in Portsmouth, Dr J H G Randolph was made Bishop of Guildford he offered Albert the job of his Secretary - chauffeur.2 He appeared in the household as a boarder of Robert William Oliver and Minnie Oliver in the 1911 census in South View, Barnett Lane, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Albert was Chaffeur and Private Secretary to Bishop of Guildford Estate Church.5 Albert served as a Private in Royal Army Service Corps enlisting on 15 August 1914.6 Privates Albert and William Latham with their Red Cross van which they drove in France. Albert kept a diary during the war.2,7
After he was demobbed he was lodging in Woking, Albert sat for the permanent Civil Service examination and passed with high marks choosing to join the newly formed Air Ministry.2 He married Maria Jane Evelyn May Edgington, daughter of William Harfield Edgington and Maria Bicknell, on 28 June 1922 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony performed by the Bishop of Guildford, was witnessed by James John Latham, William Harfield Edgington, Beatrice M H Randolph and Jane Edgington. Albert was a civil servant like his father. May made her own wedding dress.8,9 Albert bought a Triumph motor cycle from an Army dump, mended it and added a sidecar in which he and May travelled to Cornwall for holidays.2 Albert and May bought and lived in Horsell High Street at a house that they named Pentewen after their holiday there.2 Albert bought a piece of land in 1927 in East Wittering and drew up plans and built a bungalow there where the family went for weekends. Albert was a fascinating man who, in his spare time, made crystal radio sets, cuckoo clocks. Being good at drawing he also drew up many architecture plans for people wanting to erect a building or extend, add to their property. He advertised as A J Latham - plans and specifications.2 Albert bought a plot of land in Hullbrook Lane in Shamley Green, with an option on the next one. Albert drew up plans for a bungalow. It was built and completed in 1938, he named it Homeleigh. May's parents came to live with them until their deaths. It was not until 1966 that he built a pair of semi detached houses on the second plot.2 During their lives Albert and May travelled extensively often taking their tent or VW camper van. They also did start a world sea cruise in 1976 but returned home by air from Cairo as May was unwell.2 His wife Maria died on 16 February 1980 in Surrey, England.10,2 In 1984 Arthur slipped up on black ice on his drive in Homeleigh, Hullbrook Lane, Shamley Green and broke his hip. He was taken to Royal Surrey Hospital and had a plate and two pins put in. They were taken out later as they had worked loose. He wrote the story of his life when he got to his 100th birthday.2 He died on 5 January 1990 in Eastlake Care Home, Nightingale Road, Godalming, Surrey, England.11 His body was cremated at Guildford Crematorium on 15 January and his body was buried reunited with his wife and son in plot O4 on 22 January 1990 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.12

Maria Jane Evelyn May Edgington was born on 12 May 1893 in Alton, Hampshire, England, her mother died giving birth to her.1 She was the daughter of William Harfield Edgington and Maria Bicknell.2 She was baptised on 19 July 1893 in St Nicolas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, her father was a police constable.3 She was the daughter of William Harfield Edgington and Minnie Edgington in the 1901 census in Stroud Common, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.4 She was the daughter of William Harfield Edgington and Minnie Edgington in the 1911 census in Upper House Farm, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. May was a dressmaker.5 She married Albert James Latham, son of James John Latham and Ellen Louisa Butler, on 28 June 1922 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony performed by the Bishop of Guildford, was witnessed by James John Latham, William Harfield Edgington, Beatrice M H Randolph and Jane Edgington. Albert was a civil servant like his father. May made her own wedding dress.6,7 Albert and May bought and lived in Horsell High Street at a house that they named Pentewen after their holiday there.8 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Maria Jane Evelyn May Latham was listed as living at Homeleigh, Hullbrook Lane, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, with her parents.9 During their lives Albert and May travelled extensively often taking their tent or VW camper van. They also did start a world sea cruise in 1976 but returned home by air from Cairo as May was unwell.8 She died on 16 February 1980 in Surrey, England, at age 86 she had been nursed by her husband for the past two years and had not seen a doctor.10,8 She was buried on 20 February 1980 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, May was buried in the same grave as her son Peter in plot O4.8 Her husband Albert died on 5 January 1990 in Eastlake Care Home, Nightingale Road, Godalming, Surrey, England.11

Peter Harfield Latham was born on 30 October 1927 in Pentewen, Horsell High Street, Horsell, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Albert James Latham and Maria Jane Evelyn May Edgington. He was baptised on 18 December 1927 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, his father was a civil servant.3 Peter attended a private school in Guildford and passed into the Guildford Royal Grammar school.2 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Peter Harfield Latham was listed as living at Homeleigh, Hullbrook Lane, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, with his mother and grandparents.4 He died in 1943 in Burpham, Surrey, England, from leukaemia, sadly having been diagnosed only 10 days earlier.5,2 He was buried on 20 February 1980 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, May was buried in the same grave as her son Peter in plot O4.2

William Latham was born on 29 May 1891 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.1 He was the son of James John Latham and Ellen Louisa Butler. He was the son of James John Latham and Ellen Louisa Latham in the 1901 census in 68 Toronto Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.2 William enlisted on 2 December 1914 into Royal Army Medical Corps 33249 as a Private. He weighed 141 pounds, had a chest measurement of 36½ inches, was 5 foot 11¼ inches tall and had a mole on his right forearm and below the right shoulder blade. He gave his next of kin as his father John James Latham who was living iat 86 Chichester Road, Portsmouth.3 William was award the first GC Badge on 2 December 1916.3 Privates Albert and William Latham with their Red Cross van which they drove in France. Albert kept a diary during the war.4,5
He received his demob papers on 15 January 1919.3 He was the son of James John Latham and Ellen Louisa Latham in the 1921 census in 86 Chichester Road, North End, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Herbert James Burnell Brayley Quicke was born on 4 December 1893 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of John Brayley Quicke and Elizabeth Burnell. He was the son of John Brayley Quicke in the 1901 census.2 He appeared in the household as a boarder in the 1911 census in London Road, Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, England. He was boarding with GAE Clifton a widow who took in paying guests. He gave his occupation as a bank clerk.3 Herbert sailed on board Empress of Japan leaving Yokohama on 19 May 1935. He gave his occupation as an Exchange broker. Ship landed in Hawaii on 25 May.4 He left Hawaii the next day on board Matsonia to arrive in San Francisco on 2 June 1939.5 He married Margaret Marion M Stainforth, daughter of Percy Ashworth Edwards and Iris Gertrude Lydia Adcock, in 1950 in Surrey, England.6 Herbert described as a broker sailed from Southampton on 3 April 1954 bound for Bombay on board the P&O ship Canton. He gave his UK address as Rawling, Calthorpe Road in Fleet in Surrey.7 Herbert arrived in London from Bombay on 20 July 1958 on board SS Strathnaven, his occupation was given as Commerce and India was his permanent residence. He planned to stay in UK for five months staying at Highfield, Mount Pleasant, Hartley Witney.8 He died in 1972 in Aldershot, Hampshire, England.9 He was buried in St Mary Churchyard, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, England, Herbert gained the MBE and is buried under the same gravestone as his wife.10
