James was a domestic gardener living with his sister Mabel, George Raggett was boarding with them and his sister Jessie Raggett was visiting.5 He married Eva L Dobbs on 27 November 1917 in St Margarets, Cannon Place, Brighton, Sussex, England, The Parish Magazine of January 1918 wrote that the bride from Cirencester was becomingly attired and was given away by Miss Mabel Dickenson. Eva was one of the former maids at Barnett Hill. Robert Griffiths was best man. Corporal Mercer was still a patient in the East Preston Hospital, near Worthing.6,7 Lance Corporal James Mercer who had been twice wounded, and has been for a long time in York Military Hospital in Brighton, has been honourably discharged and is taking up work of national importance.8 He died on 2 January 1962 in 27 Lynton Road, Willesden, London, England.9,10 His estate was probated on 11 April 1962 in London to John Mercer a civil servant and Alan James Mercer a draughtsman.
