Marmaduke Allan1

     Marmaduke Allan was born in 1835 in Barnard Castle, Teesdale, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of Marmaduke Allan and Barbara Gill. He was baptised on 2 August 1835.1 In the census of 7 June 1841 in Thorngate, Barnard Castle, Teesdale, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Marmaduke Allan.3 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Thorngate, Barnard Castle, Teesdale, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Marmaduke Allan Marmaduke was an agricultural labourer.4 He married Dinah Heward on 3 December 1858 in Barnard Castle Wesleyan Methodist, Barnard Castle, Durham, England, Dinah was described as the daughter of William Hewart mason. She was in fact one of two illegitimate twin daughters born in 1833 to Mary Hewart or HEWARD of Harwood in Teesdale. Mary married William TEWARD mason in 1836.5 Marmaduke was listed as the head of the family on the census of 7 April 1861 in 34 Hendon Road, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham, England, Marmaduke was a master butcher living with his wife and two children Mary and John George who was only 5 months old.6 Marmaduke was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in 18 Coronation Street, Sunderland, Durham, England, Marmaduke was a butcher living with his wife and children, all scholars. They had one servant.7 Marmaduke was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 7 Whitehouse Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, Marmaduke was a butcher living with his wife and children.8 Marmaduke was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in 7 Whitehouse Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, Marmaduke was a butcher living with his wife and children.9 Marmaduke was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 7 Whitehouse Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, Marmaduke was a retired butcher living with his wife. His son Marmaduke and daughter in law were staying with them.10 Marmaduke died in 1903 in Sunderland, Durham, England.11

     Dinah Heward was born about 1833 in Barnard Castle, Durham, England.3 She was baptised on 17 March 1833 in Harwood Chapel, Barnard Castle, Durham, England.2 She married Marmaduke Allan, son of Marmaduke Allan and Barbara Gill, on 3 December 1858 in Barnard Castle Wesleyan Methodist, Barnard Castle, Durham, England, Dinah was described as the daughter of William Hewart mason. She was in fact one of two illegitimate twin daughters born in 1833 to Mary Hewart or HEWARD of Harwood in Teesdale. In the census of 2 April 1871 in 18 Coronation Street, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Marmaduke Allan he was a scholar.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 7 Whitehouse Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Marmaduke Allan he was an assistant butcher.5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 7 Whitehouse Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Marmaduke Allan Marmaduke was a butcher like his father.6 He married Jane Ann Heward in 1900 in Teesdale, Durham, England.2,7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 7 Whitehouse Road, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Marmaduke Allan Marmaduke was a butcher shopkeeper.8 Marmaduke died in 1940 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales.9

     Richard Gill Allan was born in 1843 in Teesdale, Durham, England.2,3 He was the son of Marmaduke Allan and Barbara Gill. In the census of 30 March 1851 at Thorngate, Barnard Castle, Teesdale, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Marmaduke Allan Richard was a scholar.4 He was listed as a drapers assistant on the census of 7 April 1861 in Market Place, Bishop Auckland, Durham, England.5 He married Maria Tace Dote in 1864 in Auckland, Durham, England.6 Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Cockerton, Durham, England, Richard was a wagon railway builder living with his wife and daughter.7 Richard was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in Gt Francis St 9 Belvedere Place, Duddeston, Aston, Warwickshire, England, Richard was a carpenter on the railways living with his wife and four children.8 His wife Maria died on before 1891.9 Richard was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in 2 Oak Street, Harbourne, Staffordshire, England, Richard was a carpenter, wagon maker living with his children.10 He married Ellen Box in 1897 Ellen was Richard's second wife.2,11 Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 192 Wattriella Street, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, Richard was a hardware dealer living with his wife and their children Arthur, Henry and Frank and Ellen children Ellen and Thomas.12 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 13 Sandwell Place Halfords Lane, Smethwick, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the lodger of John and Charlotte Tranter and their children in their five roomed home.13 Richard died in 1918 in Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, England.14 Ellen was a widow when she married Richard Gill Allan. The boys then moved to the USA with their mother, living in Maine. Their father remained in England with daughter Rosa, as he was too ill to travel.1

The boys then moved to the USA with their mother, living in Maine. Their father remained in England with daughter Rosa, as he was too ill to travel.1

In the census of 2 April 1871 in Marshall Terrace, Darlington, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Richard Allan Huitson.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 9 Westwood Terrace, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Richard Allan Huitson Edith was a scholar.5 She married Albert Arthur Blackburn on 4 March 1891 in Brunswick Street, Darlington, Durham, England, after the banns had been read. the ceremony was witnessed by John Thomas Hawkesby and Mary Elizabeth Blackburn. Both Albert and Edith lived at 47 George Street. Albert was a grocer.3,6 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 139 Lower Dioncombe, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Albert Arthur Blackburn.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Thornaby Vale Cottage, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Albert Arthur Blackburn.8 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 45 Stainsby Street, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Albert Arthur Blackburn.9 There is a picture of Edith by her brother Marmaduke's grave in Popperinge New Military Cemetery, II.F.20, Popperinge, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.1,10 Edith died on 4 September 1948 in 6 Watson Grove, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire, England, aged 77.1
