John was living with his wife and children Sarah H Saunders his sister in law and two servants completed the household.5 His wife Catherine died before 1876. He married Eliza Amelia Stevens, daughter of Alfred Stevens and Eliza Osmond Nichols, on 9 February 1876 in St Andrew, Farnham, Surrey, England, after a licence was issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Alfred Samuel Thomas, Dora Stevens and May Bailey. Her estate was probated on 27 May 1924 in London to John Norman Bailey a Solicitor and Gertrude Osmond Pitcairn, wife of James Edward Pitcairn. Her effects were valued at £2,078 13s 8d.11
