Wilfred John H Humphries

     Wilfred John H Humphries was born in 1899 in Shalbourne, Berkshire, England.1 He was the son of John Humphries and Rachel Jane Cummins. He was the grandson of James Humphries in the 1901 census in Oxenwood, Berkshire, England.2 He was the son of John Humphries and Rachel Jane Humphries in the 1911 census in West Soley, Chilton Foliat, Berkshire, England.3 Wilfred enlisted in Guildford into the Rifle Brigade 13th Battalion with a regimental number 49030 formerly 13/58017 TR.4 He died on 25 August 1918 in France killed in action. The village of Gomiecourt had been captured two days previously, had he been wounded during this battle. His parents were living at Willinghurst Farm in Shamley Green.4 He was buried in Gorniecourt South Cemetery, Bapaume, Pas de Calais, France, in plot I F 5.5 Wilfred's name also appears on the Shamley Green War Memorial.6
