     Arthur Charles Royal was born on 12 April 1886 in Shamley Green, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Charles Royal and Emily Edwards. He was baptised on 30 May 1886 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, his family lived in Lords Hill and his father was a labourer.2 He was the son of Charles Royal and Emily Royal in the 1891 census in Lordshill Common, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Charles Royal and Emily Royal in the 1901 census in Lordshill, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Arthur was a garden boy.4 Arthur joined the Royal Navy in Guildford giving an incorrect year of birth. He stated he was born on 12 April 1888 instead of 1886. He first served on Victory V on 11 June 1906. He served on many ships and was described as being 5 foot 6 inches tall, with brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion.5 Able Seaman Arthur Charles Royal died on 1 November 1914 at age 28 when Scharnhorst crippled HMS Good Hope with its third Salvo. Fifty seven minutes later Good Hope sunk with all hands during the Battle of Coronel, off Chile in the first major naval engagement of the war. Arthur's service number was SS1439 in the Royal Navy.6,7 Arthur is remembered on Shamley Green War Memorial and Portsmouth Naval Memorial.6

     Jane Maria Royal was born circa 1879 in Shamley Green, Surrey, England. She was the daughter of George Royal and Emma Spreadborough. She was the daughter of George Royal and Emma Royal in the 1881 census in Woodlands Cottages, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.1 She was the daughter of George Royal and Emma Royal in the 1891 census Woodlands Cottages, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.2 She married Alfred Richard Hedger on 17 May 1902 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Annie Louise Royal and James William Hedger. Alfred was a bricklayer from Bramley, his father John Hedger was a labourer. Jane's father George Royal was a labourer.3 She died in 1961 in 3 Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England.4 She was buried on 19 April 1961 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England.5
