     James Elsley was baptised on 27 April 1806 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, his parents were James and Charlotte Elsley.1 He married Hannah Ellis on 26 April 1828 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by James Smith and Hannah Smith.2 He was listed as head of household in the 1841 census in Bramley Street, Bramley, Surrey, England. James was an agricultural abourer living with his wife and children.3 James was convicted at Kingston Assizes on 23 March 1844 of the wilful murder of Lord Grantleys bailiff James Edwards. He was found guilty and sentenced to be transported for life.4 The Times of 28 March 1844 reported the trial of James Elsey on 23 March 1844 who was convicted of wilful murder and transported for life to Australia from Woolwich, along with 223 others, aboard the Agincourt on 6 July 1844. He arrived at Norfolk Island on 9 November 1844. By all accounts Norfolk Island Penal Colony was a horrifying brutal place and it was closed in 1855, when surviving convicts were sent to Tasmania.4,5,6

The ceremony was witnessed by Ellen Edith Sole and John Monk. Thomas was a labourer.1 She was the wife of Thomas Henry Punter in the 1911 census in Lordshill, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Thomas was a coal porter in the gunpowder works living with his wife, children, unmarried sister in law Ellen Sole and niece Ada aged 1.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Alice was listed as living at Orchard Cottage, Sweetwater Lane, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, with her husband Thomas. Thomas was a general labourer living with his wife, daughter and sister in law.      Eliza Simmonds married Henry Elsley, son of James Elsley and Hannah Ellis, on 15 September 1849 in St Mary the Virgin, Shalford, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnesed by John Baidyd and Eliza Douglas. Henry was a labourer like his fathe James Elsley and Eliza's father John Simmonds.1

George Frederick Elsley

     George Frederick Elsley was born on 19 February 1863 in Shalford, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of George Elsley and Fanny Newman. He was baptised on 12 April 1863 in St Mary the Virgin, Shalford, Surrey, England, his parents were George and Fanny Elsley, her father worked as a gardener.2 He was a son of George Elsley and Eliza Elsley in the 1871 census in Shalford Cottages, Shalford, Surrey, England.3 George joined the Royal Navy on his 16th birthday signing up for 10 years, he gave his year of birth as two years earlier. He probably should have been 18 to join!!. He was 4 foot 10 inches tall, brown hair, blue eyes and a ruddy complexion.4

     Emily Elsley was baptised on 10 January 1869 in St Mary the Virgin, Shalford, Surrey, England, her father was a gardener.1 She was the daughter of George Elsley and Eliza Colyer. She was a daughter of George Elsley and Eliza Elsley in the 1871 census in Shalford Cottages, Shalford, Surrey, England.2 She died on 14 March 1943 in St Peter Home, Mortimer Place, Kilburn, London, England, at age 74 her usual address was Briarwood, Reigate Hill in Reigate.3,4 Her estate was probated on 6 April 1943 in Llandudno to Miss Catherine Maud Armstrong. Her effects were valued at £4,062 2s.4
