John Dorrington Metcalfe was born on 22 March 1946 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.1 He was the son of Eric Dorrington Metcalfe. He married Susan Margaret Phillips in 1968 in Pontypool, Monmouthshire, Wales.2 John and Susan moved with their children David and Rebecca around 1982 to Wonersh.3 His wife Susan died on 5 April 2012 in Gatesbury, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England.4 He married Wendy Anne Carter on 27 June 2014 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Rebecca Tomlinson and Graham Carter. John was an engineering consultant. His father Eric Dorington Metcalfe was a civil servant. Wendy was a carer, her father Neville Frank Carter was deceased and had been a chartered accountant. Both John and Wendy were widowed and they gave their address as Perigrines 2 The Close in Wonersh.5
Wendy and John were stalwarts of the congregation at St. John’s (the groom John was a former churchwarden) so it was a full house in the church for their wedding ceremony, with many friends from the village filling every available pew alongside Wendy and John’s respective family members. After the church service everyone moved to a marquee on Church Green where tea and cakes was served, speeches delivered, and the wedding cake cut.5 He died on 2 April 2020 in Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford, Surrey, England, at age 74.6 The funeral of John Dorrington Metcalfe took place on 28 April 2020 The entry in the paper read: METCALFE JOHN Passed away on 2nd April 2020 at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. He loved his grandchildren, driving fast, having an alcoholic drink whenever he could, booking holidays, the Welsh rugby team, gardening and being part of his local church (not necessarily in that order)! John was an active member of his church community as a lay reader, treasurer, church warden and worked tirelessly to ensure the church he loved continued to grow and flourish. He loved being an engineer and never wanted to fully retire, after years working and travelling for ExxonMobil, UOP and Jacobs, he continued to work as a consultant. He has been a loving husband to his wife Wendy and they were able to enjoy just under 6 years of marriage, where they enjoyed lots of holidays and time with the grandchildren. John is survived by David and Rebecca and has 2 grandchildren. He can now rest having lived a full and happy life, he will be missed by many here in Surrey, but also across the globe, however we believe he's now joined his first wife, Sue. A funeral is being held on 28 April, but the family will invite friends and loved ones to come together to celebrate John's life as soon as it's safe to do so.6
