He was a Private in 1st Oxford Bucks Light Infantry serving in Wellington Nilgiris India. His wife and two surviving children were with them.      Albert Ernest Ayears was born on 1 September 1887 in Rochester, Kent, England.1 He was the son of George William Ayears and Julia Phoebe Clews. He was the son of George William Ayears and Julia Phoebe Ayears in the 1891 census in 6 Rose Street, Rochester, Kent, England.2 He was the son of George William Ayears in the 1901 census in 88 Constitution Road, Chatham, Kent, England. Albert was a pot boy.3 Albert joined the army in 1906 serving in the Army Corp no 25129. He served until 1909 when he undertook work as a telephone labourer.4 He married Rose Balchin, daughter of Henry Balchin and Sarah Scott, on 2 July 1910 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by James Balchin and Jeremiah Craniteh Albert was a labourer and his father George William Ayears was a bricklayer, Rose's father's Henry Balchin was an engineer. Albert was called up as soon as war was declared into 4th company of 3rd battalion of Royal West Kent Regiment. His job in France was delivering rations up the line by horse and wagon he rode one of the horses.4 Driver Albert Ayears was home in July 1915 on a short leave.5 In March 1919 Albert was discharged from the army and resumed his employment as a telephone engineer until his retirement.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Albert was listed as living at Laurel Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England, with his wife Rose.      Eva L Dobbs married Henry James Mercer, son of Henry Mercer and Hannah Porter, on 27 November 1917 in St Margarets, Cannon Place, Brighton, Sussex, England, The Parish Magazine of January 1918 wrote that the bride from Cirencester was becomingly attired and was given away by Miss Mabel Dickenson. Eva was one of the former maids at Barnett Hill. Robert Griffiths was best man. Corporal Mercer was still a patient in the East Preston Hospital, near Worthing.1,2

     Oliveria Louisa Prescott was born in 1842 in Kensington, London, England.1 She was the daughter of Frederick Joseph Prescott and Elizabeth Oliveria Russell. She was the daughter of Frederick Joseph Prescott and Elizabeth Oliveria Prescott in the 1881 census in 13 Oxford Street, Paddington, London, England.2 She was the sister of Henry Warner Prescott in the 1901 census in Brantyngeshay, Chilworth, Surrey, England.3 She died on 11 January 1917 in Brantyngishay, Chilworth, Surrey, England, The Parish Magazine of February 1917 descrivbed her a a holy and benevolent woman and the poor and suffering of Blackheath and Chilworth have indeed lost a true friend. In many charities she had good success and ill success, but no wavering in her belief that even in the worst some good can be found. She had that chaity which hopeth all things. She was a most gifted musician, and it was a real grief to her that increasing deafness complled her to give up the piano. Her interest in the Nurse Fund and in the Mothers' Meeting was maintained right up to the last. She was also a whole hearted supported of the Local War Savings Association in Blackheath.4,5,6 She was buried on 15 January 1917 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot 598. Her estate was probated on 16 March 1917 in London to Henry Warner Prescott. Her effects were valued at £4,807 8s 9d.6
