William George Butcher was born in 1884 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.2 He was the son of Henry Butcher and Elizabeth Hill. He was baptised on 8 November 1885 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He died on 15 June 1917 I believe he signed up as George Butcher with a false year of birth as he was probably too old to sign up as himself. He enlisted as Private 5894, 10th Battalion The Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment and the son of Henry and Elizabeth Butcher of Wonersh.1 In the Surrey Advertiser of 27 August 1917 there was a report that Lance Corporal W Butcher, the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Butcher of Wonersh Common was serving in The Queens and had been wounded in the head on 8 August 1917 and was recovering in hospital. He had been wounded altogether five times the last occasion being 4 May. He was about to return to the front after serving at the front for over two years.4 (William) George is remembered in the Voormezeele Enclosure No 3 which is in Wittenhuisstraat in Belgium. The war grave inscription register refers to his next of kin being F J Butcher, Compton Manor Gardens, King's Somborne in Hampshire. I believe this to be his brother.1
