Margaret Ann Simmonds was born in 1852 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 She was the daughter of William Joseph Simmonds and Margaret Bowd. She was baptised on 11 July 1852 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at the same time as her sibling Albert.2 She was the daughter of William Joseph Simmonds and Margaret Simmonds in the 1861 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 She was a daughter of William Joseph Simmonds and Margaret Simmonds in the 1871 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England. Margaret was a Post Office Assistant.4 She married James Thomas Hardy on 14 March 1880 in St Mary, Islington, London, England, after the banns had been read on 29 February, 7 March and 14 March in this church as both being of this Parish. The ceremony was witnessed by William Joseph Simmonds and Frances Sarah Simmonds. James was a Compositor and his father Henry a Cooper. Margaret's father William was described as a Rate Collector. Both James and Margaret gave their address as 8 Twyford Street in Islington.5,6 She was the wife of James Thomas Hardy in the census of 3 April 1881 Wonersh, Surrey, England.7 She was the wife of James Thomas Hardy in the 1891 census in Petersfield Villa, Barnett Lane, Wonersh, Surrey, England. James was a printer reader living with his wife and three children. At this time Barnett Lane was called Woodgers Lane.8 She was the wife of James Thomas Hardy in the 1901 census in 2 Walton Villas, Walton Road, Woking, Surrey, England. James was a printers reader living with his wife and children.9 She was the wife of James Thomas Hardy in the 1911 census in Chinthurst, Grove Road, Woking, Surrey, England. James was a reader printer living with his wife and two of his daughters in their six roomed home. James wrote that they had six children two of which had died before 1911. I initially thought their sixth child was Elizabeth born in 1909 and died 11 weeks later but she was baptised in private and the record states she was a baseborn child, so I have no idea who their sixth child was.10 She witnessed the marriage of Leonard Hesketh Ramsden and Christine Hardy on 21 June 1918 in Christ Church, Woking, Surrey, England.11,12 She died on 19 October 1929 in Chinthurst, Grove Road, Woking, Surrey, England.13,14 She was buried on 22 October 1929 in Wonersh and Blackheath Cemetery, Wonersh, Surrey, England, in plot 425 after a service conducted in St John the Baptist in Wonersh by Rev G H Isaacson Assistant Curate of Christ Church, Woking. Her husband James was buried in the same plot in 1933.15 Her estate was probated on 9 December 1929 in London to her husband James Hardy, a retired printers reader. Her estate was valued at £464 18s 4d and later resworn as £555 8s 4d.13

Howard Simmonds was born in 1878 in Godalming, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Albert Edward Simmonds and Rebecca Kemp.1 He was the son of Albert Edward Simmonds and Rebecca Simmonds in the 1881 census in Bakers Shop, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Albert Edward Simmonds and Rebecca Simmonds in the 1891 census in Wonersh Street, Wonersh, Surrey, England.4 When Albert's father William died in March 1894, Albert, Rebecca and their six children moved into Stone Cottage.5 On 14 October 1898 he drowned when the steamship Mohegan floundered on the treacherous pair of rocks known as the Maen Voes (The Voices) Manacle Rocks, Falmouth at 6:45pm. The Manacles Rocks lie just over a mile east of Manacle Point on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula. Their name is derived from the Cornish for Church Rocks or Maen Eglos, they are a treacherous crescent of submerged and semi-submerged rocks notorious for claiming the lives of many hundreds of seafarers. Although quite scattered they can be defined as three main groups of rocks. There was much written about this wreck including the story that it was a deliberate act and insurance fraud.

The ship was sailing from Tilbury to the United States with a 53 passengers and 104 crew. All was well until the ship passed Falmouth. Observers noted that the ship was too close in to the coast and despite attempts at warning her of this, the Mohegan under Captain Griffiths carried on. The passengers were believed to have just sat down for dinner when a horrible grinding sound was heard from the hull. The ship had just hit Vase Rock and had its rudder torn off. Helpless, the Mohegan ploughed headlong into the Maen Voes where she quickly started sinking. The ship sank within twenty minutes leaving only her funnel and the top of her superstructure visible. 107 souls were lost, many were buried in a mass grave in St. Keverne Churchyard nearby. A stained glass window was erected in St Keverne’s church bearing the inscription: To the Glory of God and in memory of the persons who perished in the wreck of the SS Mohegan on the Manacle Rocks. There is also a window erected by the Atlantic Transport Comp., owners of the vessel.6,7 He was buried on 20 October 1898 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, next to his grandfather William after a service in St John the Baptist in Wonersh to celebrate his memory.8,9
