James Thomas Hardy was born circa 1851 in Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He married Margaret Ann Simmonds, daughter of William Joseph Simmonds and Margaret Bowd, on 14 March 1880 in St Mary, Islington, London, England, after the banns had been read on 29 February, 7 March and 14 March in this church as both being of this Parish. The ceremony was witnessed by William Joseph Simmonds and Frances Sarah Simmonds. James was a Compositor and his father Henry a Cooper. Margaret's father William was described as a Rate Collector. Both James and Margaret gave their address as 8 Twyford Street in Islington.2,3 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Wonersh, Surrey, England. James and Margaret were living together with a lodger the Curate of Wonersh James Staffurth. James was described as a printer reader.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Petersfield Villa, Barnett Lane, Wonersh, Surrey, England. James was a printer reader living with his wife and three children. At this time Barnett Lane was called Woodgers Lane.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in 2 Walton Villas, Walton Road, Woking, Surrey, England. James was a printers reader living with his wife and children.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Chinthurst, Grove Road, Woking, Surrey, England. James was a reader printer living with his wife and two of his daughters in their six roomed home. James wrote that they had six children two of which had died before 1911. I initially thought their sixth child was Elizabeth born in 1909 and died 11 weeks later but she was baptised in private and the record states she was a baseborn child, so I have no idea who their sixth child was.7 He witnessed the marriage of Leonard Hesketh Ramsden and Christine Hardy on 21 June 1918 in Christ Church, Woking, Surrey, England.8,9 His wife Margaret died on 19 October 1929 in Chinthurst, Grove Road, Woking, Surrey, England.10,11

His effects were valued at £1,435 10s.13
