Grace Smithers

     Grace Smithers was born about 1808 in Esher, Surrey, England. She married Robert Anderson on 24 September 1838 in St Alphege, Greenwich, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Elwyn Ridley and John Lamb. Robert was a widower and worked as a gardener, his father James Anderson was a labourer. Grace's father Thomas Smithers was a woodman.1 In the census of 7 June 1841 in Teddington, Middlesex, England, she was listed as the wife of Robert Anderson.2 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, she was listed as the wife of Robert Anderson.3 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Hampton Road, Teddington, Middlesex, England, she was listed as the wife of Robert Anderson.4 Her husband Robert died on 17 October 1866 in Teddington, Middlesex, England.5,6 She witnessed the probate of the estate of Robert Anderson on 2 December 1866.6 Grace was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, Grace was a market gardener living with her children.7 Grace died on 26 May 1879 in Teddington, Middlesex, England.8,6 Grace was buried on 31 May 1879 in St Mary, Teddington, Middlesex, England.8 Her estate was probated on 21 July 1879 at Principal Registry to her son John Anderson of Teddington a licensed victualler and William Porter of Teddington a gentleman. In the census of 30 March 1851 at Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, he was listed as the son of Robert Anderson.2 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, he was listed as the son of Grace Anderson Robert was an unemployed carpenter.3 In the census of 3 April 1881 in The Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, he was listed as the brother of David Anderson Robert was a carpenter.4 He married Eliza Hard on 17 September 1881 in St James, Hampton Hill, Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by J F Collinson and J Hard. Robert was a carpenter, his father also called Robert was a nurseryman. David Anderson

     David Anderson was born in 1851 in Teddington, Middlesex, England.1 He was the son of Robert Anderson and Grace Smithers. In the census of 7 April 1861 in Hampton Road, Teddington, Middlesex, England, he was listed as the son of Robert Anderson.2 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, he was listed as the son of Grace Anderson David was a carpenters apprentice.3 David was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in The Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, David was a florist with over 2 acres employing 3 men and 3 boys living with his brother Robert a carpenter.4 In the census of 5 April 1891 in The Nursery, Teddington, Middlesex, England, he was listed as the brother of Robert Anderson David was a florist.5 He married Mary Nimms in 1899 in St George, Hanover Square, London, England.6 David was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in Florist, Hampton Road, Teddington, Middlesex, England, David was a nurseryman living with his wife and brother Robert.7 David was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 15 Hampton Road, Teddington, Middlesex, England, David was a nurseryman, living with his wife who was helping in the business, they had no chiildren. Also with the was his brother Robert a retired carpenter and sister in law Janet Nimms who had been born in Abercorn in Scotland and was aged 56.8 In 1919 David sold the nursery for £2,000 he was a senior partner of R & D Anderson. He donated £1,00 towards the building fund for the Teddington Hospital, a two ward cottage hospital. The hospital was still in existance in 2020, one ward is called Grace Anderson Ward.9 His wife Mary died on 8 December 1926 in The Firs, Horsham Road, Uckfield, Sussex, England.10,11 He witnessed the probate of the estate of Mary Anderson on 20 January 1927.10

     Bert Hartwell was born on 29 December 1889 in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England.1 He married Grace Ada Anderson, daughter of James Anderson and Sarah Smithers, in 1913 in Brentford, London, England.2 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Bert was listed as living at 61 Richmond Road, Twickenham, Middlesex, England, with his wife Grace. Bert was a greengrocer and removal contractor.3 His wife Grace died on 8 March 1963 in 18a Cambridge Park East, Twickenham, Middlesex, England, aged 79.4,5 He witnessed the probate of the estate of Grace Ada Anderson on 2 May 1963 he was a retired greengrocer.5 Bert died in 1967 in Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, England.6

On 29 September 1939 in the National Register William Bert Hartwell was listed as living at 61 Richmond Road, Twickenham, Middlesex, England, with his parents William was a lorrydriver and farm producer.2 He married Doris M Simpson in 1940 in Brentford, Middlesex, England.3 William died on 1 May 1984 in 1 Fitzwygram Close, Windmill Road, Hampton Hill, London, England, aged 68.4,5 His estate was probated on 20 July 1984 Administration papers were issued in London . His effects were valued at not exceeding £40,000.5
