     Emilia Margaret Guthrie was born in 1859 in Marylebone, London, England.1 She was the daughter of James Alexander Guthrie and Ellinor Stirling. She was baptised on 18 June 1860 in Holy Trinity, Marylebone Road, Westminster, London, England, the family lived at 30 Portland Place.2 She was a daughter of James Alexander Guthrie and Ellinor Guthrie in the 1871 census in 78 Portland Place, Marylebone, London, England.3 Emelia bought the hilltop site on Chinthurst Hill and sixty eight acres foor £5,100 in 1884. In 1893 she asked the young Edwin Lutyens and commissioned him to build a large house. It was completed in 1895. She was by then qualified as a medical doctor.4 She married Ninian Lowis Elliot on 25 March 1896 in St Peter, Eaton Square, Pimlico, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Caustruther Thomson, Cecil Bingham, Kate Elliot and Gilbert Elliot. Ninian was listed as an Esquire like his father Augustus John Elliot who was deceased. Emilia's father James Alexander Stirling was also listed as an Esquire.5,6 In 1897 Emelia sold the house to Lord Rendel and she went to live on the Isle of Mull with her husband. Theodore was an apprentice to a boot and shoe manufacturer.3 He married Gladys M P Brown in 1913 in Bristol, Somerset, England.4 He received the probate of the estate of Constance Helen Ellis on 6 January 1927.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Theodore was listed as living at 60 Charlestown Road, St Austell, Cornwall, England, with his wife Gladys.
