He married Lilian Maffie Greenfield on 2 June 1926 in St Nicholas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Alfred Greenfield, H Greenfield and Arthur W Ball. James was a farmer from Ewhurst and his father James Jelley was a gardener. Lilian's father Alfred Greenfield was a carpenter.2,3 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register James was listed as living at Myholme, Tillingbourne Road, Shalford, Surrey, England, with his wife Lilian. James was a mineral water salesman.4 He died on 14 March 1941 in 10 Warren Road, Guildford, Surrey, England, at age 42 his usual address was Myholme, Tillingbourne Road in Shalford, Surrey. he was a member of the Bramley Home Guard 5th Battalion.5 He was buried in Shalford Cemetery, Shalford, Surrey, England, in Section B Grave 37.6 His estate was probated on 9 June 1941 Administration papers were issued in Llandudno to his widow Lilian Maffie Jelley. His effects were valued at £960.5
