George was a dashing farmer from Cranleigh and had repeatedly requested the hand of Fanny, but her father had rejected him and placed his daughter under the most rigid surveilance. Fanny managed to escape and with a conveyance in readiness and with friends ready to aid, the couple were conveyed under good escort to London where they were married at St Martin in the Fields in Westminster that day. The ceremony was witnessed by Henry William Davis and William Coram after the banns had been read. George was a widower and farmer, his father Robert Bruford was also a farmer. Fanny's father William Messenger was a farmer.4,5,6,7 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Hollist, Cranleigh, Surrey, England. George was a farmer of 530 acres employing 12 men 8 women and 5 boys living with his wife, his sister in law was visiting with two servants.8 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in 2 Wakehurst, Cranleigh, Surrey, England. George was a farmer of 220 acres employing 6 men and 1 boy and a brewer employing 5 men living with his wide, son and two servants.9 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Feathers Hotel, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England. Gerge was listed as a hotel keeper living with his wife and daughter. They had one servant and three boarders Charles Barnford, also listed as ahotel keeper, Charles W Watson, and a journalist called E? Van Morden.10 He died on 31 March 1903 in Harefield Valley, Uxbridge, Middlesex, England.11 His estate was probated on 27 October 1903 in London to his widow Fanny Ellen Bruford. His effects were valued at £542 2s 1d.11
