George Langrish was born circa 1832 in Neatham, Hampshire, England, his parents were James and Mary Langrish née Turvill. He married Jemima Kersley Complin in 1868 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England.1 His wife Jemima died in 1874 in Alton, Hampshire, England.2 He married Mary Jane Messenger, daughter of William Messenger and Ellen Newman, on 25 July 1878 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by George Turvill and Rosa Messenger. George was a widower and listed like his father James Langrish as a Gentleman. Mary's father William Messenger was a farmer.
The Times of 27 July 1878 reported the wedding saying: Mary Jane, known as Minnie was the eldest daughter of the late William Messenger of Woodlands, Wonersh.3,4 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Wyck Farm, Binsted, Hampshire, England. George was a farmer of 622 acres employing 25 men and 8 boys living with his wife and children with three servants.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Wyatt House, Binsted, Hampshire, England. George was a yeoman living with his wife and children and three servants.6 His wife Mary died on 14 September 1892 in Wyck, Alton, Hampshire, England.7,8 He died on 12 August 1896 in Alton, Hampshire, England.9 The Hampshire Herald wrote on 14 August 1896 saying: Father and son both found drowned in a lake in the grounds of W. Wickham MP. There were no witnesses. About 8.30, Wednesday, J. Rogers (head gardener and bailiff to William Wickham) was taking a short cut, through the grounds, he heard a noise similar to someone shaking trees but was startled by a loud cry or moan. He started to look around, when nearing the portion of water bordering the Wickham Copse, he saw a hat and coat lying on the bank. He looked at once into the water and about 12 feet from the bank, saw a body. He broke away the guard surrounding the water and tried with the aid of this to reach the body. He himself fell into the water. He managed to get onto the bank and raised a cry for help, which was soon forthcoming.
On getting the body to the bank they were horrified to find it was Mr. George Langrish. The family was notified and William Langrish went to the lake and said that he believed his eleven year old brother must be there as well. The body of the boy was recovered about midnight. Father and son had been seen in the village round about 8 pm near Wyck Green which is close to the lake. It is believed the child fell into the water and the father tried to save him. Verdict Accidental Death.10 He was buried in Holy Cross, Binsted, Hampshire, England.11
