Percy Stevens was born on 16 February 1887 in Farncombe, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of William Stevens and Rose Jones. He was the son of William Stevens and Rose Stevens in the 1901 census in Lords Hill, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Percy was a domestic gardener.2 He was the son of William Stevens and Rose Jones in the 1911 census in Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Percy was a painter.3 Percy joined the Royal Navy as 2nd cooks mate on hs first ship on 7 December 1915 was Victory I and later HMS Mohawk.4 He died on 27 October 1916 at age 29 he was killed as a direct result of enemy action, during HMS Mohawk's response to an offensive attack by 23 high speed German Topedo boats on the Dover Barrage and Allied shipping in Dover harbour. They sank six drifters and also the empty British Troop Transport 'Queen' off the Goodwin Sands after taking its 10 member crew prisoners. In the subsequent engagement 45 men including Percy were killed and 4 were wounded. Three British destroyers, three drifters and a naval trawler were damaged. Only one German MTB was damaged and they sustained no casualties so they got away lightly due to the intensity and speed of the attack. Percy drowned but his body was recovered and the shipping line which owned the liner paid for his body to be returned to be buried in England.4 He was buried in St James Cemetery, Copt Hill, Dover, Kent, England, in plot LW8. Percy was also remembered on Shamley Green war memorial.4,5
