Alfred William Barker, son of Agatha Barker, of 31 Ashfield Rd, Midhurst, Sussex, and the late Alfred W Barker. Stoker. Alfred William Barker was born on 3 January 1894 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Alfred William Barker and Agatha Diver Sayers. He was baptised on 4 March 1894 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, his father was a labourer and the family lived on Smithwood Common.2 He was the son of Alfred William Barker and Agatha Diver Barker in the 1901 census in The Hyde, Rumbold Hill, Midhurst, Sussex, England.3 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in The Gardens, Germains, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England. Alfred was a gardener living with another gardener.4 Alfred signed on in Portsmouth as No K. 20835 giving his correct date of birth and occupation, but seemed to suggest he was born in Croydon. He signed on for 12 years giving his height as 5 foot 4 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 36 inches, brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion. He served on Victory II and Bulwark until it was sunk.5 He died on board HMS Bulwark when at 7.50am on the 26 November 1914, an explosion ripped the ship apart. Eye witness reports stated that once the smoke had cleared, there was no sign of the ship. Debris from the explosion fell up to 4 miles away. Navy divers, investigating the wreck three days later, found just two large fragments of wreckage. The subsequent Naval court of inquiry found that the cause was either a faulty shell being stored or overheating cordite next to the boiler room. Official Navy records stated that of the 14 survivors, 5 died over the following 4 days and one on 18 January 1918. Alfred's body was not recovered.5,6 His memory is commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial 4, Midhurst War Memorial and the panels in Midhurst Parish Church. He was was awarded Star, Victory and British War medals.7
