     John Sparkes was born circa 1822 in Hascombe, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Edmund Sparkes and Hannah Hoad. He was baptised on 12 April 1823 in St Nicolas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, his family lived in Hascombe, Stovolds Hill.2 He married Jane Marden on 22 April 1848 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by James Hampshire and Sarah Brown. John gave his address as Bramley and was a labourer like his father Edmund. Jane came from Worplesdon and her father John was a Labourer.1,3 He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Alfold Cross, Alfold, Surrey, England. John was an agricultural labourer and toll collector living with his wife and family.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Crossways, Alfold, Surrey, England. John was a Toll Gate Collector lving with his wife and four of his children.5 His wife Jane died in 1879 in Alfold, Surrey, England.1,6 He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Crossways, Alfold, Surrey, England. John was a General Labourer living with his son, daughter and grandaughter Amy aged 3.7 He died in 1885 in Alfold, Surrey, England.8 He was buried on 7 August 1885 in St Nicholas, Alfold, Surrey, England.9

Henry was a farm labourer living with his wife and children.
