John Sparkes was baptised on 10 April 1785 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Richard Sparkes and Sarah ...2 He married Anne Street, daughter of John Street and Elizabeth ..., on 8 July 1824 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Wm Street, Frances Street, Sarah Sparkes and Sophia Street.3 He was listed as head of household in the 1841 census in Woodhill, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. John was described as a yeoman and was living with his wife and three servants.4 He received the probate of the estate of Richard John Sparkes on 18 November 1850.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Woodhill, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. John was a farmer of 938 acres employing 40 labourers living with his wife and three servants.6 His wife Anne died on 25 November 1852 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.7,8,9 He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Woodhill, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. John was a farmer employing many men and boys, his nephew William Wilkings and three servants Mary Becker, a housekeeper and Sarah Ann Walder and Ellen Walder both housemaids. John was Lord of the Manor of Rowly before his second cousin WW Henning as none of John's children survived infancy.10,11 He died on 12 July 1862 in Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 77.12,8 He was buried on 17 July 1862 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.13 In the Main East end of Christ Church in Shamley Green is a window that has three roundels with two cinquefoil windows each with an angel in each holding a text. The one on the left 'He was wounded for our transgressions' and on the right 'He was buried for our iniquities'. Above is a centrally balanced quatrefoil containing the IHS symbol. Below are three larger lancet windows. The one on the left shows the Christmas Nativity scene, the one on the right shows the Resurrection and in the centre is the Crucifiction. The inscripton reads: In memoriam Johann Sparkes Obitt 12 Julii 1862.11'

The ceremony was witnessed by Alice L Chaplin, Ethel J Chaplin, Cyril L Shepard, Fanny Shepard and Adrianne L Chaplin. Ernest was an artist, his father Henry Dunkin Shepard was an architect. Her London address was given as 29 Devonshire Street, Portland Place, Marylebone.9,10,6 In 1936 Ernest was living with his children Mary and Graham and Graham's wife Ann in 5 Melina Place, Marylebone, London, England.11 Ernest was living with his son Graham and his wife Ann in 1937 until at least 1939 in 5 Melina Place, Marylebone, London, England.11 He received the probate of the estate of Ethel Jessie Shepard on 24 March 1942.4 It is believed during the Second World War that Ernest lived at Long Meadow. Longdown Road, off One Tree Hill, Guildford in Surrey and certainly when he received news of his son Graham's death. Ernest was second in command of "B" Company of the Guildford Home Guard and was also responsible for the Home Guard in Merrow and the downs area.12,13
He received the probate of the estate of Graham Howard Shepard on 27 November 1943.14 He married Norah M R Carroll in November 1944 in Paddington, London, England, Norah was a nurse working in St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.15,6 Ernest was an English artist and book illustrator, best known for his human-like animals in illustrations for "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame and "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A. A. Milne. He received a commission in the Royal Artillery and 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross for his service in World War I. Hired by Milne to illustrate his book of poems "When We Were Very Young, he went on to illustrate "Winnie-the-Pooh". Ernest modelled Pooh not on the toy owned by Christopher Robin, Milne's son, but on "Growler", a stuffed bear owned by his own son, Graham. Both of Ernest's children, Graham and Mary, became illustrators, also.16 Ernest received the OBE in 1972.6 He died on 24 March 1976 in Lodsworth, Sussex, England, at age 96.17 He was buried in St Peter Churchyard, Lodsworth, Sussex, England.16

Graham Howard Shepard was born on 7 July 1907 in Red Cottage, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Ernest Howard Shepard and Florence Eleanor Chaplin. He was baptised on 22 September 1907 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, his father was an artist.2 He was the son of Ernest Howard Shepard and Florence Eleanor Shepard in the 1911 census in Red Cottage, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.3 He married Ann Faith Gibbon, daughter of John Murray Gibbon, on 26 September 1931 in Holy Trinity, Guildford, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Ernest H Shepard and Murray Gibbon. Graham was a journalist and his father Ernest Howard Shepard was an artist. Ann was from the parish of St Bass in Cumberland, her father John Murray Gibbon was a railway publicity manager.4,5,6 In 1936 Ernest was living with his children Mary and Graham and Graham's wife Ann in 5 Melina Place, Marylebone, London, England.7 Graham and Ann sailed from Southampton on 20 June 1936 on board the ship Quebec bound for Quebec. Graham was listed as a journalist and they gave their address as 5 Melina Place NW8.8 Ernest was living with his son Graham and his wife Ann in 1937 until at least 1939 in 5 Melina Place, Marylebone, London, England.7 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Graham was listed as living at 208 Abbots Road, Watford, Hertfordshire, England, with his wife Ann. Graham was a journalist on the editorial staff.9 He died on 20 September 1943 at age 36 Graham was serving in Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and lost his life while on convoy duty on H.M.S. Polyanthus as a Lieutenant and is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on panel 80 column 1.
HMS Polyanthus and other ships in the Flower class escorted convoys in the Atlantic. The scale of the Battle of the North Atlantic is highlighted by the loss of HMS Polyanthus. On the night of 19–20 September 1943, two westbound Convoys ONS18 and ON202 were facing frequent U-boat engagements, and summoned HMS Polyanthus to their aid in the wake of the near destruction of HMS Escapade and HMS Lagan. After successfully driving away U238, HMS Polyanthus was ordered to rescue the crew from the escort HMCS St. Croix which was sunk by U-305. HMS Polyanthus was then sunk by U952. At least 7 officers and 77 crew were lost, with the single known survivor drowning within days after another U boat attack on the ship that rescued him, HMS Itchen There had been 29 escorts for the forty ship convoy ON-202, sailing from Liverpool to New York. Two Liberty ships were attacked by U 238. U270 fired a torpedo at HMS Lagan which hit her stern. The explosion killed 28 of her crew. The U 270 was depth charged on 22 September by one of the escorts. Just before 22:00 hours one of the wolf pack (of no less than 17 submarines) torpedoed HMCS St. Croix I-81, another of the escorts. 148 of her crew died, 81 survivors were picked up by HMS Itchen.10,11 His estate was probated on 27 November 1943 in Llandudno to his father in law Ernest Howard Shepard an artist. Travers published from 1933 to 1988.3 In 1936 Ernest was living with his children Mary and Graham and Graham's wife Ann in 5 Melina Place, Marylebone, London, England.4 She married Edmund George Valpy Knox in October 1937 in Surrey, England, Edmund was a widower when he married Mary. He was a colleague and friend of her father E H Shepard.5,3,6 Her husband Edmund died on 2 January 1971 in Hampstead, London, England.7 She died on 4 September 2000 in Islington, London, England, at age 90.8,3

Edmund George Valpy Knox was born on 10 May 1881 in Headington, Oxfordshire, England.1 He married Christina Frances Hicks in 1912 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.2 Edmund was a Poet and satirist, he was the editor of Punch magazine from 1932 to 1948.3 His wife Christina died on 30 May 1935 in 4 Le Braun Road, Eastbourne, Sussex, England.4,5 He received the probate of the estate of Christina Frances Knox on 6 December 1935 in London.
