Walter John Edwin Sheppard

     Walter John Edwin Sheppard was born in 1894 in Southwark, London, England.1 He was the son of Walter John Edwin Sheppard and Elizabeth Callaghan.2 He was the son of Walter John Edwin Sheppard and Elizabeth Sheppard in the 1901 census in 10 Rawston Street, Marylebone, London, England.3 He appeared in the household in the 1911 census in St John's Seminary, Wonersh, Surrey, England. As a clerical student.4 Walter sailed from Liverpool on board the ship Corsican on 5 October 1911 bound for Quebec.5 He died on 24 April 1915 at Langemarck (according to the war diaries) he was Private 16244 in the Canadian Infantry. His next of kin was listed as Miss G Scale, Chateau Kerdaniel, Chateleandum, Cotes du Nord. He was one of a machine gun crew and when in action on the Eastern side of Pilkem, near Langemarck, he was struck in the head and died instantly. He was not moved from where he fell, and as the enemy afterwards occupied the ground they would probably bury him just East of Pilkem with many of his comrades.2,6 He is remembered in Menin Gate, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, on Panel 18 - 28 - 30.2 Walter's name also appears on the plaque in St John's Seminary, Wonersh, Surrey, England.7

     Walter John Edwin Sheppard was born on 29 January 1864 in Calne, Wiltshire, England.2,3,4 Walter was listed as a 'passenger' at Castle Cary, joining the railways on 1 November 1878 and was dismissed on 2 May 1880.4 He appeared in the household as a boarder in the 1881 census in 2 Commercial Road, Melcombe Regis, Dorset, England. He is boarding with William and Alice Symonds. William was an Inn Keeper. Walter was listed as a railway engine cleaner.5 It appears Walter signed on to serve on the Pride of the Isles in Bridport in 1879 leaving on 26 October 1882.6 He married Elizabeth Callaghan, daughter of Denis Callaghan and Hannah ..., in 1889 in Southwark, London, England.1,7 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in 2 Garfield Terrace, Bermondsey, London, England. Walter was a Metropolitan Police Constable living with his wife, daughters and parents in law.8 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in 10 Rawston Street, Marylebone, London, England. Walter was a Metropolitan Police Inspector living with his wife and children.9 He died in 1904 in Southwark, London, England.10

She married Sidney Albert Hayward, son of Sidney Hayward and Mercy Rose Porter, on 27 May 1912 in Llangurig, Powys, Wales.1,2 Sidney and Sarah and the children moved ot Peartree Cottage in Blackheath in 1923. On 2 September 1939 in the National Register Sarah was listed as living at Pear Tree Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England with her husband Sidney. Sidney was listed as a railway delivery and coal merchant, Sarah was a petrol pump attendant.3 She died in 1952 in Pear Tree Cottage, Blackheath, Surrey, England.4 The funeral of Sarah Ann Jones took place on 24 July 1952 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5

     Reginald Young was born on 31 March 1907 in Guildford, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of John Young and Agnes Cassell. He was the son of John Young and Agnes Young in the 1911 census in Summerpool Cottage, Bramley, Surrey, England.2 He married Ada Emily Little, daughter of Edward Edgar Little and Rose Cooke, in 1936 in Wandsworth, London, England.3 Reginald and Ada set up home at Gerda 6 New Road bringing up their family and living till they died.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Reginald was listed as living at Gerada, 6 New Road, Wonersh, Surrey, England with his wife Ada. Reginald was Gardener living with his wife and small daughter Brenda.5 He died in 1996 in Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, Surrey, England, his usual address was 6 New Road in Wonersh.6 He was buried on 25 March 1996 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.7
