     Gustave Bourgat was born on 8 January 1867 in Perigueux, France.1,2 Gustave received his 2nd Mate certificate of competency in the Merchant Service on 24 November 1887, his 1st Mate on 7 November 1889 and Master of a foreign-going ship on 9 February 1904.3 Gustave was living at 7 Royal Avenue, Chelsea when he appeared on 18 June 1894 before Rt Hon Herbert Henry Asquith asking for a Certificate of Naturalization. He was listed as being born in Perigueux in France, the son of Jean and Marie Rateau Bourgat. His father was a subject of Switzerland and his mother a subject of France. He was an unmarried master marriner. The oath of allegiance was signed on 22 June 1894.
