George Whitehead was born in 1908 in Warsaw, Poland. He was the son of Charles Whitehead and Eleanora Wedel. George and his brothers grew up at the Marki factory, the family occupying the manager's house. In the summer of 1914, George and his family came to England for the holidays. While there war broke out and they were unable to return to Poland. The years of the war for the boys were spent at preparatory school in Bournemouth, followed by public school at Oundle and then Oxford. In 1922 the three boys returned to Poland for the summer holidays at Marki.1 George spent a year in France with a French family perfecting his French before returning to Poland to complete his military service with the Polish army. he was obliged to do this as he had a Polish passport, his father not having registerd his birth with the bRitish Consular in Warsaw.1 The Wedel family firm opened a branch in Paris. George went to New York World's Fair in 1939 and while he was there Hitler marched into Czechoslovakia before the exhibition ended. George managed to get a passage on a ship sailing for Genoa as Italy had not entered the war at that time. He then headed for Paris and eventually England. He was appointed Adjutant of NO 308, one of the Poles fighter squadrons and was in close association with the Poish fighter squadrons throughout the Battle of Britain.1 George volunteered for the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in 1943 as he felt he could with his knowledge of Polish and French be of great use to SOE. George was awarded the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre.1 George settled after the war in Jersey.1 He died in 1986.1
