His address was Derryswood in Wonersh. His parents also gave time to the Red Cross.4 Peter joined the Royal Navy enlisting in Portsmouth on 13 March 1916. He was 5 foot 8 inches tall with a chest measurement of 33.5 inches, his hair was brown, his eyes were hazel and he had a fresh complexion. He gave his occupation as a gardener. The first ship he served with was the Victory when he joined her on 5 July 1916, his last ship being Emperor of India from 6 September 1916 until he was demobed on 16 April 1919.5 Peter trained with his father as a gardener at Derryswood and became head gardener at Round Down in Gomshall for the Heaton family. He married Winifred Hilda Ann Smith on 15 December 1923 in St John the Evangelist, Milford, Surrey, England, after the banns were read. Edward Whiteman was born circa 1858. He married Ellen Jeal, daughter of John Jeal and Harriet Saker, on 26 October 1884 in St John, Croydon, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Walter Whiteman amd Sarah Jeal. Edward was an oilman and his father John Timothy Whiteman was a baker. Ellen's father John was a carpenter.1
