     Martin C Hughes was born in 1940 he was the only child of an engineer and a musician.2 Whilst studying at Exeter College, Oxford he started reading modern languages, but then swapped to theology. He went on to Chichester Theological College and was ordained as deacon in 1963, and as priest in the following year. He served his curacy at Holy Trinity, Roehampton, where he met Joyce.2 He married Joyce R E Sutherland in 1964 in Wandsworth, London, England, the couple moved to Addlestone in Surrey. They went on to have three children and five grandchildren.1,3 Martin was installed as the Vicar of Burpham, Guildford, in 1971 and in 1988 he moved on to the parish of Shamley Green,
where he remained until he retired in June 2005.1 He was also extremely practical and enjoyed success at woodwork (furniture and toys as well as candlesticks turned on a lathe.) and particularly model making. Much of the furniture in both his and his children’s homes was made by him. He was also a model railway enthusiast and all of his children and grandchildren fondly remember helping him with his impressive home model railway, which was never quite finished! It remains intact.2 In retirement in Bishops Waltham, he has continued to take services at numerous local churches and contribute to the community, supported by Joyce.2 He died on 31 January 2020.1 The funeral of Martin C Hughes took place His funeral was attended by around two hundred people as well as twelve robed clergy, together with further clergy including a retired bishop in the congregation - testifying that Martin had lived as a much-loved family man and a respected and popular priest.2

Brothers Thomas and Frederick were boarding with Henry and Emily Scales.3 He married Lilian Mary Gatenby in 1927 in Dorking, Surrey, England.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Frederick was listed as living at 37 Howard Road, Dorking, Surrey, England, with his wife Lilian. Frederick was an acting ganger building roads and bridges. He was also an ARP warden.5
