She was a dressmaker living with many other dressmakers. John Simpson was the draper in whose house they all resided.3 She was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Grocers shop, Wonersh Common, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Caroline was a dressmaker living with her sister who managed the grocers shop. They had three boarders who were all dressmakers assistants and one servant living with them.4 She married John Whitton Mill on 27 October 1897 in St Peter and St Paul, Albury, Surrey, England, after the bann s had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by James Etherington, Florence Etherington and James Mill. John a widower was a dairyman, his father John Mill was a farmer. Caroline's father James Etherington was a builder.5 John, and farmerand Caroline together with John's children from a previous marriage Christina Maud aged 6 and Louise Irene aged 5 sailed on 26 November 1897 from London on board Oraya bound for Albany in Australia.
