He was a son of Thomas Hill and Ellen Hill in the 1871 census in Stroud, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.2 George deserted from the military on 29 May in 1876 in Stafford, he was serving with 2nd Stafford and regimental number 8450.3 He married Mary Jane Barnes, daughter of Charles Barnes, on 24 April 1882 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Edgar Francis Bowling and William Broomfield. George was a labouter his father Thomas Hill was a sweep.
