Edna Edith Huntley was born in 1911 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, her mothers maiden name was Griffiths.1 Her father was a secretary to a margarine company and her mother was an elocutionist. She had a brother and sister and went to school at Calder High, within a stone's throw of Penny Lane, where she excelled at sport. She played lacrosse for the county and club cricket. Above all she was a tennis player, she qualified for Wimbledon playing there for a few years, getting through to the second round once, being defeated by Louise Brough who was to become Ladies Champion four times. Having trained as a professional sports teacher and coach, she taught variously at Dorking High School, Cheltenham Ladies College, and after moving to Wonersh in 1955, at Guildford High School for 10 years. She also spent some years as coach to the Birtley Tennis Club.2 She married William T Pool in 1938 in Wirral, Lancashire, England.3 She and William T Pool were divorced.2 She married John Watson Mercer, son of John Mercer and Edith Watson, in 1949 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, John was with Shell, working on property acquisition for all new petrol stations springing up after the war.4 Her husband John died on 11 February 1985 in 16 The Close, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5,6 Edna lived on the first house on left 16 The Close off Cranleigh Road in Wonersh. Her fence was demolished many times by careless drivers coming down the road from Cranleigh taking the bend by the entrance to Wonersh Park too fast.7 She died on 12 September 2014 at age 102 Her obituary in Get Surrey announced she was a much loved mother, grandmother and former Wimbledon tennis player.8 She was buried on 29 September 2014 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.9
