The family lived at 79 Eastwood Road in Chertsey and his father was a coach builder.1 He married Gwendoline Box in 1929 in Cuckfield, Sussex, England.2 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Lionel was listed as living at 3 Police Cottage, Rectory Lane, Woking, Surrey, England, with his wife Gwendoline. Lionel was a police Sergeant 268 living with his wife There were three police cottages next to one another all with policmen and their families living in them.3 On 14 September 1944 Lionel a policeman of 21 years and a Temporary Polce Inspector attended and attempted rescue work at an aircraft crash at Dunsfold.      Robert Thornhagh Gurdon was born on 18 June 1825 Robert was the eldest son of Brampton Gurdon and Henrietta Susannah daughter of Lord Colborne.1 He was the son of Brampton Gurdon. He married Harriott Ellin Miles on 4 September 1862.1 His wife Harriott died on 9 April 1864.1 He married Emily Frances Heathcote in 1874 in St George Hanover Square, London, England.2 He was the son of Brampton Gurdon in the 1881 census in 38 Hill Street, St George Hanover Square, London, England. Robert was the Member of Parliament for South Norfolk and a Barrister at law, not practicing.3 He died on 15 October 1902 in England at age 77 Robert represented successfully the Southern and Mid Divisions of Norfolk in Parliament and was created Baron Cranworth in 1899 He was Chairman of Quarter Sessions for the County of Norfolk from 1868-1901 and the first Chairman of the County Council from 1889 - 1902.1 He was buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Cranworth, Norfolk, England.1

     Harriott Ellin Miles was born Harriott was the sixth daughter of Sir William Miles Bart.1 She married Robert Thornhagh Gurdon, son of Brampton Gurdon, on 4 September 1862.1 She died on 9 April 1864.1
