This is what Gertrude had to say about the Bowbricks and their cottage.
“There still exists in Bramley an old cottage of one room above and one below. The rooms are 10 feet square (3 meters square). The lower one is five feet 9 inches to the underside of the joists. The upper one was reached by a ladder through an opening in the floor. In the upper floor the old couple slept on a large bag of chaff that lay on the floor. The Bowbricks were everything neat and clean about them. Mr Bowbrick had quite a pride in ‘my kitchen’, the downstairs room. Bowbrick was a fine sturdy worker to the end of his days. He had been a soldier in his youth and turned out smartly on Sundays. We always noticed his well blacked boots, neat gaiters and well brushed coat of an old fashioned cut; his head was tied in a clean blue handkerchief, for he had lost one eye. He came regularly to church and sat on a narrow bench at the foot of a column just opposite our Pew.
The cottage is a good deal obscured, from the point a photograph can be taken, by a timber erection with a corrugated iron roof, in which slaughtered pigs are hung, till they are ready to be cut up”.3
