John might have been linked to the community of Independants based at Lords Hill which also had links with a similar group at Loxwood. It is possible he was enlisted in a non combatant role as we do not know his rank, age or where his next of kin lived though the fact that his name is on our war memorial indicates that he or his parents must have lived somewhere in the village. The Commonwealth Grave records state there are nine J Crouchers, four of whom are John. During the 1930s/40s members of the Croucher family were prominent in the management of Lords Hill Stores when it continued as a flourishing commercial retail business (bakery, butchery, green grocer, hardware and haberdashery) during the inter war era then living, throughout WWII right up to 1950’s when more people acquired cars and began to shop further afield and the Manager Mr Partridge decided to close it a few years after buying out the interests and freehold from the rapidly declining Dependant community.1 John Croucher was born circa 1888.2 He died on 8 May 1915 while serving in the Kings Own Regiment in Belgium and is listed on the Ypres Memorial.2
