Algernon Hubert Saunders was born on 15 May 1891 in Blackheath, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of Charles William Saunders and Edith Matlock. He was baptised on 9 August 1891 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Charles William Saunders and Edith Saunders in the 1901 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England.4 Algernon was listed as a stained glass painter, five foot seven inches tall with a chest measurement of 37 inches, brown hair, hazel eyes and a fair complexion when on 10 October 1910 when he enlisted into the Royal Navy. He was initially sent to HMS Pembroke to commence his training as a sick bay attendant. He served on many hospital ships presumably helping many wounded men.5,6 He appeared in the 1911 census in Halsar Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire, England. As a Probationer Sick Bay Attendant in the Royal Navy.7 Sick Bay attendant Algie Saunders came home at the end of 1915 for a few days leave after a busy time in the North Sea.8 The Surrey Advertiser reported that Algernon had recently had a remarkable escape from drowning. Since the commencement of the war he had been serving on a minesweeper which struck a mine and sank in a few minutes.9 He died in 1930 in Ireland Island, Bermuda, he was a leading sick bay attendant in Royal Navy Hospital.2,10 He was buried on 8 July 1930 in Royal Navy Cemetery, Ireland Island, Bermuda.2,10
