Granville Anson Chetwynd was born circa 1758. He married Martha Stapylton on 29 July 1783 in St Michael le Belfry, York, Yorkshire, England.1 His wife Martha died in 1822.2 Granville signed his will on 14 January 1828.3 Granville lived at Somerset Place on the Strand in London. He gave evidence at the Old Bailey on 29 October 1829 that the prisoner Martha Geary had been for about six years in his service, at Hadley, and Somerset-place, as housekeeper - she bore the best character possible; when she left his service, by her own desire. He allowed her to remain in the house for a few days: when he went out of town at the end of June, or early in July, till October - when he returned she had left; she went to the Aethenium without any intermediate service: the linen had been put away in a press, and was examined about a month after he returned - a considerable quantity was then missing; he did not suspect her till the discovery at the Aethenium, when he was sent for to Marlborough Street, and a great quantity of linen shown to him, some of which he could positively swear to, being marked with his initials; he lost the articles stated in the indictment, among others - the value of them is about 39 shillings. This all happened about 5 July 1824 and the articles in question were nine sheets, three napkins and towels, and fourteen pillow-cases. Mary first stated the linen belonged to her husband's brother, then that Mrs Stapylton had given it to her, however Mrs Stapylton had died fourteen months before the offence took place. Mary was found guilty and sentenced to transportation for seven years.4 He died on 2 December 1834 in Beckenham, Kent, England.5 His estate was probated on 31 December 1834 before the Worshipful John Daubeny Doctor of Laws and Surrogate by the oath of Henry Richard Chetwynd.6
