     Abraham Lassam was born circa 1836 in Cranleigh, Surrey, England. He was the son of James Lassam and Leah Balchin. He was baptised on 24 October 1836 in St Nicolas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, the family lived in Horseblock Hollow and his father was a labourer.1 He married Harriett Field, daughter of Michael Field, on 1 October 1859 in St Peter and St Paul, Ewhurst, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Abriel ? Jones and Mary Anne Dewdney. Abraham was a labourer like his father Jammes Lassam. Harriet's father Michael Field was also a labourer. Both Abraham and Harriet came from Ewhurst.2,3 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Holly hock, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Abraham was a a labourer living with his wife and children, little Edwin was just 10 months old.
