     Robert Courage was born circa 1831 in Dulwich, Surrey, England. He was the son of John Courage and Susan Hawes. He was the son of John Courage and Susan Courage in the 1841 census in Camberwell, London, England.1 He was the son of John Courage and Susan Courage in the 1851 census in Dulwich, Surrey, England. Robert was a brewer.2 He married Annie Michell in 1853 in Lewisham, London, England.3,4 Robert was admitted into the Chamber of London and given the Freedom of the City as the legitimate son of John Courage a brewer on 15 November 1854.5 He was listed as head of household in the 1861 census in Elham, Kent, England. Robert was described as a Gentleman living with his wife and children, Harold was just three months old. His nephew Charles G Laurd, a Captian in the Royal Artillary was staying with the family. The household also contained five servants.6 He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in 56 Queens Gate, Kensington, London, England. Robert is described as a brewer and interestingly enumerated as Richard, living with his wife and some of his children, little Annie being just 3 months old with nine servants. His sister in law, Julia Smith and her ladys maid completed the household.7 Robert, Edward and Henry Courage were listed on the electoral registers of St Anne, Westminster in 1881 as each having one third of the freehold and living in The Cock public house, 17 Litchfield Street, Horsely Down, Southwark, London, England.8 He received the probate of the estate of Robert Michell Courage on 7 May 1887 Administration papers were issued in the Principal Registry to his father Robert Courage of the Brewery. His effects were valued at £12,017 1s.9 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Snowdenham Hall, Bramley, Surrey, England. Robert was a brewer living with his wife and family. Florence Hamilton was visiting the family. Sixteen servants completed the household.10 He died on 31 December 1893 in Snowdenham, Bramley, Surrey, England, from influenza. He had property also in Horselydown in Surrey and 56 Queens Gate in London.      Annie Michell was born circa 1829 in Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. She married Robert Courage, son of John Courage and Susan Hawes, in 1853 in Lewisham, London, England.1,2 She was the wife of Robert Courage in the 1861 census in Elham, Kent, England. Robert was described as a Gentleman living with his wife and children, Harold was just three months old. His nephew Charles G Laurd, a Captian in the Royal Artillary was staying with the family. The household also contained five servants.3 She was the wife of Robert Courage in the 1871 census in 56 Queens Gate, Kensington, London, England. Robert is described as a brewer and interestingly enumerated as Richard, living with his wife and some of his children, little Annie being just 3 months old with nine servants.      Robert Michell Courage was born on 15 May 1854 in Elham, Kent, England, Robert was registered in the GRO register as 'Male' Courage.1,2 He was the son of Robert Courage and Annie Michell. He was baptised on 8 July 1854 in St John the Baptist, Greenwich, London, England, his father was a brewer and the family lived in Eltham.3 He was the son of Robert Courage and Annie Courage in the 1861 census in Elham, Kent, England.4 He was a son of Robert Courage and Annie Michell in the 1871 census in 56 Queens Gate, Kensington, London, England.5 Robert was admitted into Trinity College Cambridge on 5 July 1872. His address at the time was Mousehill Manor in Godalming.1 Robert held a share in 1885 of the freehold of 11 Feathers Court in Drury Lane. He was living in Anchor Brewery Horsleydown in Southwark at the time.6 He died on 11 April 1887 in Bramley, Surrey, England, at age 32.7,8 He was buried on 14 April 1887 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, in row 4 no 15.9 His estate was probated on 7 May 1887 Administration papers were issued in the Principal Registry to his father Robert Courage of the Brewery. His effects were valued at £12,017 1s.8

He was baptised on 2 April 1857 in St John the Baptist, Greenwich, London, England, his father was listed as a Gentleman and they lived in Elham.2 He was the son of Robert Courage and Annie Courage in the 1861 census in Elham, Kent, England.3 He married Mary Watson on 11 March 1879 in St Stephen the Martyr, Hampstead, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Courage and John Dawson Watson. Frederic was a clerk and his father Robert Courage was a brewer. He was baptised on 22 February 1859 in St John the Baptist, Greenwich, London, England, his father was a brewer and the family lived in Elham.1 He was the son of Robert Courage and Annie Courage in the 1861 census in Elham, Kent, England.2 He appeared in the 1871 census in The Elms, Ramsgate, Kent, England. He was listed as a pupil.3 Charles was admitted to Jesus College Cambridge on 1 October 1877.4 He married Camilla Beardmore on 18 December 1888 in St Stephen, Kensington, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Courage and William Beardmore. Charles was a Gentleman, his father Robert Courage was a brewer. Camilla was living in Govan, Glasgow and her father William Beardmore was deceased but had worked as an ironmaster.5,6 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in The Hatch, Larch Avenue, Sunninghill, Berkshire, England. He was baptised on 9 September 1863 in St John the Baptist, Greenwich, London, England, her father was listed as a brewer and the family lived in Elham.2 He was a son of Robert Courage and Annie Michell in the 1871 census in 56 Queens Gate, Kensington, London, England.3 Godfrey enlisted in the Royal Navy and was listed in the Active Officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in July 1890 as a Lieutenant.4 He was the son of Robert Courage and Annie Courage in the 1891 census in Snowdenham Hall, Bramley, Surrey, England. Godfrey was a Retired Naval Officer.5 He married Evellyn Agnes Pain on 8 April 1891 in St Stephen, Kensington, London, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by W H Pain, Wyndham Hacket Pain and Robert Courage. Godfrey had been a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, his father Robert Courage was a brewer.      Oswald Michell Courage was born on 23 October 1866 in Pembury, Kent, England.1,2 He was the son of Robert Courage and Annie Michell. He was a son of Robert Courage and Annie Michell in the 1871 census in 56 Queens Gate, Kensington, London, England.3 Oswald was admitted to Trinity College Cambridge on 23 May 1884.2 He married Gertrude Hilda Baggallay on 18 January 1890 in St Stephen, Kensington, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Courage, Henry C Baggllay and Marianne Baggllay. Oswald was listed as a Gentleman like his father Robert Courage. Gertrude's father Richard Baggallay was deceased and had been Lord Justice of Appeal.4,5 He died on 8 September 1937 in The Mount, Ifield, Sussex, England, at age 70.4,6 He was buried in Crawley, Sussex, England.2 His estate was probated on 13 November 1937 in London to Michell Wyndham Hacket Pain a Major in HM Army, George Nicholas Hardinge a Company Director abd John Rustat Hensted a Managing Director. She was a daughter of Robert Courage and Annie Michell in the 1871 census in 56 Queens Gate, Kensington, London, England.2 She married Wyndham Hacket Pain on 30 April 1889 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Courage and A Elias. Wyndham was a Lieutenant in the Queens Regiment at Stoughton Barracks in Guildford. His father George Pain was a Surgeon General. Annie was from Snowdenham and her father Robert Courage was a brewer.3 She was listed in the household of Annie Courage in the 1891 census as a visitor in Haling Grove, Croydon, Surrey, England. Annie and her husband Wyndham were visiting her mother.4 She was the wife of Wyndham Hacket Pain in the 1901 census in Officers Quarters Inkerman Barracks, Woking, Surrey, England.      Wyndham Hacket Pain was born circa 1857 in Gibraltar. He married Annie Michell Courage, daughter of Robert Courage and Annie Michell, on 30 April 1889 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Robert Courage and A Elias. Wyndham was a Lieutenant in the Queens Regiment at Stoughton Barracks in Guildford. His father George Pain was a Surgeon General. Annie was from Snowdenham and her father Robert Courage was a brewer.1 He was listed in the household of Annie Courage in the 1891 census as a visitor in Haling Grove, Croydon, Surrey, England. Annie and her husband Wyndham were visiting her mother.2 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Officers Quarters Inkerman Barracks, Woking, Surrey, England. Wyndham was a Major in the Royal Navy Reserves living with his wife, daughter and six servants. They had a visitor Muriel M M Parsons.3 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Bransgore House, Cuckoo Hill, Christchurch, Hampshire, England. Wyndham was a retired Major living with his wife, daughter and niece Hilda M Courage. There were six servants in the household.4 He died on 26 September 1919 He was Lieutenant Colonel in The Queens (Royal West Surrey) and the Commandant of Prisoners of War Camps at Dalmellington in Ayrshire,Colsterdale in Yorkshire, and at Bramley in Hampshire. His wife was living at Bransgore House in Christchurch. He died of a combination of meningitis and heart failure.5,6 He was buried in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, in grave F16.5

     Michell Wyndham Hacket Pain was born on 27 January 1890 in Bramley, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Wyndham Hacket Pain and Annie Michell Courage. He was baptised on 25 February 1890 in Holy Trinity, Bramley, Surrey, England, his father was a Lieutenant in the Queens Regiment and the family lived in Snowdenham in Bramley.2 He appeared in the household of Robert Courage and Annie Courage in the 1891 census in Snowdenham Hall, Bramley, Surrey, England.3 He appeared in the household in the 1901 census in Hill Side School, Godalming, Surrey, England. He was one of the boarders.4 He married Audrey Ernestine Jermyn Ford in 1919 in St George Hanover Square, London, England, Major Michell Hacket Pain was serving in the Queens Royal Regiment and for the next sixteen years he and Audrey occupied many different houses as was the custom of military families.They came to Wonersh in 1935 when they were invited to occupy Upper Lostiford House by Mrs Wyndham Pain of Derrys Wood.5,6,7 Michell was listed on the electoral rolls from 1923 - 1930 as being resident in the Officers Quarters in Stoughton Barracks.8 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Michell was listed as living at Upper Lostiford, Wonersh, Surrey, England, with his wife Audrey. Michael was a Major The Queens Royal .. In peace time Sub Director Courage and Co Ltd Director …. Corporation living with his wife with a cook. Michael was a reserve Officer in the Queens Royal and his wife Audrey was an Assistant Commandant in the British Red Cross in Surrey.9 He died in 1971 in Surrey, England.10

     Robert St John Willans was born in 1877 in Guildford, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of St John Willans and Ethel d'Aeragon Courage. He was baptised on 18 October 1877 in St John the Evangelist, Milford, Surrey, England, his father was a Captain and Brewat Major and Queens Regiment.2 He was the son of St John Willans and Ethel d'Aeragon Willans in the 1881 census in Norton Barracks, Norton by Kempsey, Worcestershire, England.3 He was the grandson of Robert Courage and Annie Courage in the 1891 census in Snowdenham Hall, Bramley, Surrey, England.4 Robert was admitted into Trinity College Cambridge on 30 June 1896 after attending Guildford the Harrow Schools.5 Robert was a Second Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1900 and served in the South African wars. He retired in 1905.5 He died on 9 November 1914 in Ypres, Belgium.6,7 His name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial Bay 12.6 His estate was probated on 5 January 1917 in London to Basil Wilson Serle a managing director. His effects were valued at £1,102 1s 5d.7
