James was a bricklayers labourer.5 He was the son of George Luxford in the 1911 census in Maplewood Cottages, Smithbrook Common, Cranleigh, Surrey, England. James was a builders labourer.6 James enlisted into Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 116170 on 1 December 1915 in Cranleigh. he was 5 foot 8 inches tall, weighed 173 ib and had a chest measurement of 41 inches.7,8 He died on 12 December 1918 in France from broncho pneumonia having contracted influenza six days earlier.7,8 He was buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Duisans, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, in plot V11 B 55.7 All James articles of private property were sent to his mother Mary on 25 April 1919, they included his pipe, two knives, watch and chain, wrist watch, strap and guard, two tobacco boxes, note book, purse, fork and spoon, two metal rings, a religious book, cloth wallet, cards and photos.9
