Alfred James Whitwick was born circa 1860 in Welbourne, Sussex, England.1 He married Fanny Luxford in 1882 in Reigate, Surrey, England.2 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Smithwood Common, Cranleigh, Surrey, England. Alfred was an agricultural labourer living with his wife and children.3 Alfred and Fanny lived in Northern Cottage, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, when their son Harry enlisted into the Queens Regiment in 1913.4 His wife Fanny died in 1927 in Smithwood Common, Cranleigh, Surrey, England.5,6 He died in 1943 in 20 New Street, Lymington, Hampshire, England.7,6 He was buried on 16 October 1943 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, in plot H15.6

Harry Whitwick was born in 1892 in Hambledon, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Alfred James Whitwick and Fanny Luxford. Harry enlisted into the Queens Regiment as no 10373 on 26 March 1913. He was 5 foot seven inches tall, weighed 124 lb, with a chest measurement of 35 inches. He had a fresh complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair and had been a farm labourer. He was stationed at Bordon until 5 February 1914. He was discharged having been convicted by Civil law of felony on 21 January 1914.2

The ceremony was witnessed by Ernest Jenner and Ellen Whitwick. Samuel was a labourer like his father Levi Pelling, as was Charlotte's father Alfred.5,6 She was the wife of Samuel Pelling in the 1911 census in Stroud Common, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Samuel was a bricklayers labourer living with his wife and a boarder Ernest Jenner also a bricklayers labourer.7 Charlotte was listed on her brother Harry's army papers as living in 1913 in Stroud Common, Shamley Green, Surrey, England.8 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Charlotte was listed as living at Palmers Cross, London, England, with her husband Samuel. Samuel was a bricklayer.9 Her husband Samuel died on 5 June 1956 in Brookwood Hospital, Woking, Surrey, England.10,11 She received the probate of the estate of Samuel Pelling on 8 April 1957.10 She died in 1970 in Surrey, England.12

Samuel Pelling was born on 24 January 1883 in Cranleigh, Surrey, England.1 He was baptised on 5 May 1883 in St Nicolas, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, his parents were Levi and Mary Pelling.2 Samuel enlisted in Guildford into the Queens Regiment no 5758 on 4 May 1899. He was 5 foot 4 inches tall, with a chest measuremnet of 33 inches. He had a dark complexion, brown eyes, brown hair and several moles about his body. He worked as a drayman.3 Samuel served in the Mounted Infantry in South Africa from 1 September 1902 until 5 January 1904.3 Samuel served in India from 14 January 1904 through to 12 March 1907.3 He married Charlotte May Whitwick, daughter of Alfred James Whitwick and Fanny Luxford, on 7 January 1911 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Ernest Jenner and Ellen Whitwick. Samuel was a labourer like his father Levi Pelling, as was Charlotte's father Alfred.4,5 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Stroud Common, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Samuel was a bricklayers labourer living with his wife and a boarder Ernest Jenner also a bricklayers labourer.6 Samuel was a member of the British Expeditionary Force from 1 November 1914.3 Samuel received a gunshot wound 16 May 1915 in France and was admitted to Greylingwell Hospital in Chichester on 20 May 1915, where he stayed until 17 January 1916 when he was admitted into a convalesent home, Bignor Park on 23 November 1915. His wounds healed but he walked with a slight limp. He also had his tonsils removed following bouts of tonsilitis and quinsy.3 He was discharged 2 May 1916 having served 7 years in army sevice and 5 years in the reserve service. His charector was described as very good, sober, honest and trustworthy.3 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Samuel was listed as living at Palmers Cross, London, England, with his wife Charlotte. Samuel was a bricklayer.7 He died on 5 June 1956 in Brookwood Hospital, Woking, Surrey, England, at age 73 his usual address was The Hut, Tilsey Hill in Bramley.8,9 His estate was probated on 8 April 1957 in London to his widow Charlotte. His effects were valued at £260.8
