     Charles Nicholson was born on 23 November 1808 in Ilburndale, Whitby, Yorkshire, England, He is purported to be the illegitimate son of Barbara Ascough and was christened Isaac Ascough.1 On 9 October 1833, Nicholson sailed for Sydney as ship's surgeon on the James Harris at the behest of his uncle, William Ascough. Ascough had made a considerable fortune as a ship's captain and owner bringing convicts to the Colony, where he had also become an extensive landowner. Nicholson arrived on 1 May 1834 and set up as a doctor in Sydney on Jamieson Street, Wynyard. William drowned at sea while sailing from Sydney to his property on the Hawkesbury River. Charles was the main beneficiary of his will.1 In 1862 Charles returned to England, never to return to Australia although he kept a strong interest there.1 He married Sarah Elizabeth Keightley in 1865 in Holborn, London, England.2 He died on 8 November 1903 at age 94.1

     Charles Archibald Nicholson was born on 27 April 1867 in Marylebone, London, England.1 He was the son of Charles Nicholson and Sarah Elizabeth Keightley. Charles became well known as an ecclesiastical architect.2 He married Evelyn Louise Olivier on 1 October 1895 in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, England.3 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in The Poynetts, Chilworth, Surrey, England. Archibald was listed as married but living alone on census night with three servants. His wife and family were visiting Penzance. He was an architect.4 His wife Evelyn died in 1927. He married Catherine Maud Warren on 10 June 1931 in All Saints, Southend on Sea, Essex, England.5 On 1939 in the National Register Charles was listed as living at Church House, Old Headington, Oxfordshire, England, with his wife Catherine. Charles was an architect. his wife Catherine was an Evacuation Officer.6 He died on 4 March 1949 in Church House, Old Headington, Oxfordshire, England, at age 81.7,8 Charles was buried with Evelyn at Church of St Mary the Virgin in South Benfleet. Charles second wife was buried there upon her death in 1962.2 His estate was probated on 13 July 1949 in London to his widow Catherine Maud Nicholson, his daughter Elizabeth Margaret Vale also a widow and Sir John Charles Nicholson his son. His effects were valued at £19,912 9s.8

Sydney was the founder of the Royal School of Church Music.2 Sir Sydney Hugo Nicholson MVO died on 30 May 1947 in The Hospital, Ashford, Kent, England, at age 72 his usual address was Myrtle Cottage, Woodchurch, near Ashford in Kent.3,4 He was buried in Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England, in the cloisters.5 His estate was probated on 14 October 1947 in London to Arthur John Bird and Geoffrey Abdy Collins solicitors and Gerald Hocken Knight warden of the Royal School of Church Music. He was the son of William Nicholson and Isabella Sarah Meek in the 1881 census in 4 Sussex Square, Paddington, London, England.3 He was the son of William Nicholson in the 1891 census in 2 South Audley Street, Mayfair, London, England.4 Clement was educated at Harrow gaining his BA in 1896 and MA in 1901. He served as a Lieut., Royal Scots Greys. He was the Director of the Blackfriars type foundry. He served in the Great War, 1914-19 (Capt., Scottish Horse; Brevet-Major; mentioned twice in despatches; Order of the Redeemer, 4th Class (Greece.)1) He married HIlda Flora Ohlssen in 1905 Hilda was the daughter of A. Ohlssen, of Newlands, Cape Town, S. Africa.1 He married Judith Lilian Burnaby Atkins in 1913 in St George Hanover Square, London, England.5 He died on 4 January 1930 in Weedon House, Towcester, Northamptonshire, England, at age 55.6,7 His estate was probated on 2 April 1930 in London to Hon William Graham Nicholson Colonel in HM Army and Richard Francis Nicholson. He was baptised on 10 February 1904 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, his father was an architect and the family lived in Blackheath.1,2 He appeared in the household as a visitor in the 1911 census in 20 Marine Terrace, Penzance, Cornwall, England. Evelyn and her children were visiting Hilary Bloxham. Her husband was back home in Chilworth in Surrey.3 He married Caroline Elizabeth McNeice. John and Caroline left Southampton on 3 April 1936 on board the ship Indrapoera bound for what was listed as Netherlands, India. They gave their address as 17 North Road, Highgate Village N6. John was a surgeon.4 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register John was listed as living at National Temperence Hospital, St Pancras, London, England, John was lsited as married and a surgeon. Unsure where his wife was.5 He received the probate of the estate of Charles Archibald Nicholson on 13 July 1949.6 He died on 16 March 1986 in Thames Cottage, Thames Street, Sunbury on Thames, Surrey, England, at age 82.7,6 His estate was probated on 23 February 1987 in Brighton. Evelyn and her children were visiting Hilary Bloxham. Her husband was back home in Chilworth in Surrey.3 She married Walter Sidney Vale on 18 April 1928 in All Saints, Westminster, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Charles A Nicholson and Reginald Staggall. Walter was a musician, his father George Vale as a builder. Elizabeth's father Charles Archibald Nicholson was an architect.4,5 Her husband Walter died before 1939. The five siblings, Ellen, Edith, William, John and Arthur were staying at the hotel with their governess Eleanor Norman.2 He married Alice M Beach on 19 July 1890 in Holy Trinity, Chelsea, London, England, after the banns had been read. The cerenmony was witnessed by William Nicholson and W W Beach. William was like his father also William listed as a Gentleman. Alice's father William Beach was also a Gentleman.3 He was the son of William Nicholson in the 1891 census in 2 South Audley Street, Mayfair, London, England.      Reginald Nicholson was born in 1867 in Kensington, London, England.1 He was the son of William Nicholson and Isabella Sarah Meek. He was the son of William Nicholson in the 1891 census in 2 South Audley Street, Mayfair, London, England.2 He married Laura Margaret Waldegrave on 7 June 1904 in St Mary, Bryanstone Square, London, England, aftre the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Mary D Waldegrave, Isabel Nicholson and others. Reginald was listed as a Gentleman like his father William Nicholson. Laura was a widow and listed as a lady. Her father William Frederick Waldegrave was Earl Waldegrave.3 He received the probate of the estate of John Sanctuary Nicholson on 9 May 1924.4 He died on 13 October 1952 in Bereleigh, East Meon, Surrey, England.5,4 His estate was probated on 15 December 1952 in Winchester to Gerald Hugh Nicholson a distiller and John Stafford Nicholson a barrister at law and William Reginald Nicholson a distiller.
