William was a cleaner of railway locomotives.4 He married Helen Allan on 21 April 1917 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by H Allan and L L Clarke. William was a fireman in Guildford and his father also Williiam Joseph Clarke was a chauffeur. Helen was from Wonersh and her father Robert Allan was deceased and had been a soldier.5,6 He witnessed the marriage of Charles John Fowler and Elizabeth Leslie Clarke on 4 December 1922 in St Andrews Chapel of Ease, Frocester, Gloucestershire, England.7,8 William and Helen in 1923 lived in 31 Quarry Street, Guildford, Surrey, England.9 William and Helen were living in 2 Quarry Vale Cottages in Guildford in 1924.9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register William was listed as living at Glenwood North Road, Cuckfield, Sussex, England, with his wife Helen. William was a coachman living with his wife and children, little Charles was just 4 months old.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in Wonersh Park, Wonersh, Surrey, England. William was a chauffeur living with his wife and children, little Sheila was just 11 months old.5 He died on 24 January 1951 in 4 Mankey Road, Leonard Stanley, Gloucestershire, England.6,7 His estate was probated on 1 March 1951 in Gloucester to Lydia Leslie Smart, wife of William Reuben Smart. He was 5 foot 6.5 inches tall, had a chest measurement of 34 inches with light brown hair, grey eyes and a sallow complexion. His last service date was 12 May 1928 on the ship Benbow, leaving the Royal Navy on 1 January 1929. All through his service record he is classed as being of very good character.6 He died in November 2003 in Teignbridge, Devon, England.7

     Eric Wilfred Monk was born on 23 January 1911 in Chiddingfold, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Frederick George Monk and Ellen Wetherall. He was the son of Frederick George Monk and Ellen Monk in the 1911 census in Pickhurst Cottage, Chiddingfold, Surrey, England.2 Eric sailed from South Africa on Garth Castle arriving in Southampton on 18 June 1938 giving his address as Shimble, Gerrards Lane. His occupation was a chauffeur.3 He died in April 1997 in Surrey, England, at age 86.4
