     James Balchin was born in 1879 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Henry Balchin and Sarah Scott.2 He was baptised on 15 June 1879 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of Henry Balchin in the 1881 census in Wonersh Street, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Henry was an engine driver at the powder mill living with his wife, children, included one just 5 days old, his widowed mother and Uncle David Edwards.4 He was the son of Henry Balchin and Sarah Balchin in the 1891 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England.5 He married Dorcas Rowell in 1898 in Alton, Hampshire, England.2,6 He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England. James was a mechanical engineer living with his wife and son.7 He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census in 1 Mitchells Cottages, Blackheath, Surrey, England. James was a labouring mechanic in the gunpowder works living with his wife and children.8 James went on active service with the Grand Fleet in August 1915.9 Jack as he was called was one of those saved in 1916 from HMS Russell and returned home after his trying experience. He was promoted to Telegraphist in late and was taking further examinations in December.10 James worked as a gardener in Barnett Hill after the war until his retirement.11 His wife Dorcas died in 1925 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.12,13 He died on 22 November 1965 in 1 Mitchells Cottages, Blackheath, Surrey, England.14,15 His estate was probated on 16 February 1966 in London to Harold Balchin a labourer. His effects were valued at £1,639.15

     Ernest John Balchin was born on 6 March 1898 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1,2 He was the son of James Balchin and Dorcas Rowell.1 He was baptised on 1 January 1899 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England, His father was an engineer and the family lived in Blackheath.1 He was the son of James Balchin and Dorcas Rowell in the 1901 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England.3 He was the son of James Balchin and Dorcas Balchin in the 1911 census in 1 Mitchells Cottages, Blackheath, Surrey, England.4 Ernest joined as a boy sailor in the Royal Navy sailing on Impregnable on 14 January 1915. He enlisted as a full sailor on 6 November 1916 for 12 years, serving until 26 April 1928.5 The Surrey Advertiser of 15 May 1916 reported that news had been received at Blackheath by Ernest's parents that he was among the saved from HMS Russell. He was a boy telegraphist.6 He died on 22 November 1965 at age 67 he never married.7

Henry was an engine driver at the powder mill living with his wife, children, included one just 5 days old, his widowed mother and Uncle David Edwards.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census in Blackheath, Surrey, England. Henry was a millwright in the gunpowder works living with his wife and children.5 Henry was elected onto the Parish Council, performing valuable services. The Parish Magazine of April 1919 recorded that he had retired after 25 years. Frederick was an engine driver.6 Fred joined the Royal Engineers in August 1915. He was known to have returned home for 10 days leave in July 1918 after returnng from East Africa and a short spell in a rest camp in England.7 Frederick did not marry and lived in Laura Cottage in Blackheath and then later Vaughen House in Chertsey Street.8 He died in 1955 in Surrey, England.9
