Elizabeth Merriel Evans was born in 1952 in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales.1 She married John Alan Greathead, son of Frank Greathead and Olive Westthorp, in 1980 in Glamorganshire, Wales.2 John received a standing ovation from pupils, parents, staff and guests after delivering an inspirational address at his 14th and final speech day and prizegiving before retiring as the head of Bishop's Stortford College Junior School on 23 July 2013.
Seasoned with characteristic humour and anecdoates, he reflected on what he would miss most: "I'm reminded of Rupert Brooke's lovely poem The Great Lover, written whilst he was travelling in the South Seas. It speaks of the simple, everyday things of home that he was missing. Those familiar routines and highlights of the school year I will certainly miss but, most of all, I will miss the people.
"The Junior School staff are just amazing in their creativity, their willingness to go the extra mile in providing the best they can for our pupils. I'll miss their friendship and support.
"But the most important people in any school are the pupils and, goodness me, I'm going to miss them. I'll miss their energy and enthusiasm and I'll miss their fresh honesty and humour."
Never one to miss an opportunity to encourage tomorrow’s movers and shakers, Mr Greathead urged pupils to learn from their experiences of the past, but not to spend too much time looking back.
“If you spend too long looking over your shoulder, you miss the next opportunity which is approaching you and you may walk straight past it," he said. "We learn when we are very young in pre-prep or even earlier - most of what we really need to know about what is important, what to do and how to be. We learn to share everything; to play fair; don’t hit people; put things back where you found them; clean up your own mess; don’t take things that are not yours; say sorry when you hurt someone. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world it is better to hold hands and stick together. Perhaps the most valuable result of education is to accept responsibility to do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not.”
Mr Greathead brought his speech to a close by highlighting how one small word can make all the difference: “The key to success and development can begin by adding a simple, three-lettered word to those reluctant or lacking in confidence, those who say, ‘I can’t do it'," he explained. "If we add the word YET, it changes the phrase ‘I can’t’ from one of failure to one of potential success. ‘I can’t do it YET’ opens the door to just about anything. It means that you know, if you keep going, persevere, work hard, have the right attitude, you will eventually succeed. You will get there in the end. The largest room in the world is the room for improvement.”
Durham born, Mr Greathead and his family migrated via Scotland to Wrexham in North Wales, where he attended Yale High School. After gaining his Bachelor of Education in 1979 from a teacher training college in Bangor, he began his career teaching English and history at Oswestry Junior School.
Gaining experience as a head of department and resident housemaster at Swanbourne House School in Buckinghamshire, he moved to Leicester Grammar School as headmaster prior to being appointed head of Bishop’s Stortford College Junior School.
Paying tribute to his strong leadership, chair of governors Phillip Hargrave said: “In addition to the significant facility developments that he has overseen, John’s time as head of our Junior School has been one of rising standards. After our last inspection back in the spring of 2011, the Junior School received the highest possible accolade from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), to be judged as outstanding in all areas.
"That inspection followed the visit by Ofsted Inspectors the previous year who examined our boarding provision and who were particularly impressed with the warm and homely atmosphere in Grimwade. We’ve just had another Intermediate Boarding inspection, this time by the ISI. We passed on all fronts and in conversation with the inspectors it was clear just how impressed they were with Junior School boarding and the atmosphere in Grimwade House.
"So, our heartfelt thanks to John, whose enthusiasm and dedication leaves us with a school in a strong position on all fronts: physical buildings, academic performance and atmosphere.”.3
In 2019 Lucia was being driven by her grandparents on holiday when their car was hit by another car and she suffered a deep laceration across her forehead while her grandmother had to be cut from the car and suffered a broken sternum and hearing loss. Fortunately she and her gransmother recovered fully.
